File Transfer Facility

This facility provides a secure method for transferring data over the Internet and to overcome the limitations of email in transferring files

Are you:

Rules and notes

Because email is inherently insecure, this facility utilizes a secure web-based method for the actual data transfer but retains the flexibility of email for the communications. Many sites, Yale included, have strict limits on the size of an attachment. At Yale you're not allowed to send any message larger than 20 megabytes. Using this site, you can transfer much more than that. For practical reasons, we've limited the size of any individual file to 200 megabytes but you can transfer as many files as you'd like.

This works by using web browsers and email. After you click the appropriate link above you'll be taken to a form where you tell us who the files are going to. You'll upload each file that you want to send to that person. The files get loaded into a secure location on this server (transfer.med.yale.edu). After you're all done, an email message will be sent to the recipient giving them the location of the files. They use their web browser to download the files to their computer.

For obvious reasons we have to restrict the use of this service to file transfers from, to or within Yale. To enforce that, Yale personnel will be required to enter their NetID and password. They will be able to send files to anyone with an email account. Non-Yale personnel can only send mail to Yale people and they must address it to a first.last@yale.edu account. Addresses in any other format will not be accepted.

Note that we're using https - all transactions are encrypted. This encryption ensures that the data cannot be intercepted in transit. For extra security, retrieval of the file(s) can be restricted to the intended individual by providing a username/password pair which the recipient must know in order to retrieve the data.

Files uploaded to this site will remain here for 10 days after which they will be deleted.

The upload forms only accept a single recipient. If you're a Yale person, you will receive a copy of the email message. If you want multiple people to be able to retrieve the files, simply forward a copy of the message to them. Sorry, but if you're not a Yale person you won't receive a copy of the email and you'll have to use the form to send the file to each recipient individually.

If you're a Yale person with the need to transfer large numbers of files or you want the files to remain longer than 10 days, you may contact ITS for an FTP account on this machine.

A note about Java: You'll need Java runtime (JRE) 1.4 or greater installed to use the Transfer Applet. You'll see a message about an unknown certificate. Choose "accept for this session" or "grant" or whatever the message is to allow access. This restriction will go away shortly.
