POP vs. IMAP--which one is right for me?

POP vs. IMAP

POP (Post office Protocol): This method of setting up your email brings the original copy of each message down to your local computer and erases it from the server.POP connections are fast and flexible, but all your email is stored on your local machine, so if you do not back this information up to another location, you risk losing your email in the case of a hardware failure.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol): This method leaves all your email on the central server, but most email clients allow you to choose to keep local copies for viewing you remail when you are not online. Professional travelers who carry laptops, often take advantage of this. IMAP is slower way of handling email than POP, even over a high-speed network because the client and server must exchange information for every interaction.

Enabling Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is recommended for both POP and IMAP protocols.
