Sending authenticated email
- Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird for Windows and Mac OS
- Eudora for Windows
- Outlook - includes notes for Entourage
Setting your email client to send "authenticated email " means that your Yale NetID and password are used when sending email. When configured correctly, your email client (eg, Eudora, Outlook, or Thunderbird) can send email whether or not you are on a non-Yale network, such as your home ISP or a hotel. When properly configured, you can send email to both Yale and non-Yale email addresses without running a VPN (Virtual Private Network) client.
Generic settings
- Outgoing Server (SMTP) Servername -> mail.yale.edu
- Port -> 587
- Check off -> 'Use name and password' or "authentication"
- User Name: netid
- For SMTP authentication and SSL encryption, use secure connection TLS or SSL "Always", or "Required"
If you have a client that gives you the choice between SSL and TLS, choose TLS. You want to use port 587 for SMTP. TLS is preferred because it is a more recent standard.
PDAs
VersaMail on Palm (including Tungsten and Treo)

If you have read though this section and are confused or have questions - contact your local support provider.
Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird
The Netscape/Mozilla/Thunderbird family of applications all share a similar email set up on both Mac and Windows platforms. Look at the illustrations carefully to compare them to your version. It's a good idea to exit the program and reboot your computer after making these changes. This has been tested on Netscape 7, Mozilla 1.7, and Thunderbird 1.0.
Mozilla on Mac OS (Netscape 7 will be similar)

Eudora 6.2x on Windows
If you have Version 6.2.3 or later of Eudora, the option for port 587 is included on the Sending page as "Use submission port (587).

Outlook 2003 and related Outlook family programs
Special note for Outlook and Entourage (Mac OS and OS X). SSL settings for the full versions of these products as bundled with Microsoft Office have been researched and tested. Older or less featured versions may not work. Note Outlook will only do STARTTLS on port 25, not 587. Since many providers now block use of the that port, people who use Outlook and need to use encryption and authenticated SMTP should use SSL and port 465 as an Advanced Setting as shown in these examples.

It is very, very important, if you make changes to Outlook or an Outlook-like product that you shutdown your machine with power off for several seconds, and then turn your computer back on to be sure that the new settings register.
Entourage Mac OS X

Eudora 6.2x on Mac OS

If you have Version 6.2.3 or later of Eudora, the option for port 587 is included on the Sending page as "Use submission port (587).

If you have an earlier version of Eudora 6.2 if you use "Required (Alternate Port) (TLS)" and it does not work, you should upgrade Eudora.
