Identity theft: What you know can protect you

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates that as many as 9.9 million Americans become victims of identity theft each year. These crimes involve Personal Identifying Information (PII): names, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, etc. Many people associate such crimes with online scams like Phishing emails. However, most identities are stolen using low-tech methods.

Ensuring compatibility in Microsoft Office documents

If you share documents with others on campus, keep in mind that not everyone uses the same software. Furthermore, even colleagues who use the same software may use different versions. While most people use Microsoft Office (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), differences between the current versions of Office and older versions could lead to compatibility issues between users.

Windows XP: Service Pack 3

Microsoft has recently released Service Pack 3 for Windows XP and is now distributing it on the Windows Update service. Yale ITS recommends that Windows XP users NOT download and install Service Pack 3 from Windows Update at this time.

Stay tech-savvy to protect children from online predators

Technology evolves rapidly and parents need to know the latest trends to help keep their kids safe from online predators. While most parents are familiar with email and instant messaging, new platforms are springing up that could provide predators with greater access to potential victims. While the best defense is building a strong relationship with children, and keeping open lines of communication, parents must also educate themselves about the dangers facing their families, and how they can use technology to help stay safe.
