SuSE

You can download for free SuSE Linux distributions from here: ftp://ftp.wss.yale.edu/pub/linux/suse/. Look for the Network Installable ISO images in the {version}/iso directory for each {version} of SuSE.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

You can purchase a one year license for RHEL Academic Desktop for $30 or a one year license for RHEL Academic Server for $60 from here: http://www.redhat.com/solutions/industries/education/indiv/.
