Yale Film Study Center
The Yale University Film Study Center (FSC) is committed to the preservation of, and access to, resources for the scholarly study and appreciation of cinema. Activities include managing a continually expanding collection of films in most celluloid, video and digital formats.
The Film Study Center also facilitates exhibition of films in state-of-the-art screening facilities on the Yale campus.
We have over 13,000 DVDs, 6,500 VHS tapes, 640 laser discs, 2,700 16mm prints and 230 films on 35mm.
This material is available to Yale faculty and students for classroom instruction, course study and research purposes. The collection is not available for any showings outside of courses, and for any showings for which there is advertising to the general public; these include film societies and film festivals, whether or not an admission fee is charged.
Access to the celluloid collection is limited to course-related screenings through 2009. At that time, films will be accessible to scholars and researchers by appointment only and in close consultation with Film Study Center staff. Films will not circulate; however, individual researchers are encouraged to use the collections on-site if the print condition allows. The 35mm and 16mm collections are now listed on Orbis. For example, to look up titles on 16mm, you enter "16 mm" in the Search In field, and choose Search For "Call Number - Local".
The Film Study Center has one seminar room (B-20) available for classroom instruction with digital projection and one small screening room (B-21) with a 65 inch flat screen, wall-mounted monitor. We also have private viewing booths available for individual use. Two iMovie enabled work stations are available for individual use by students and faculty for course-related projects.
The Film Study Center manages two state-of-the-art film projection facilities on campus. The larger is located in the Whitney Humanities Center auditorium at 53 Wall Street. This 240 seat theater features a 20 foot wide screen, and is capable of showing 35mm and 16mm films in Dolby Stereo surround sound. The 50-seat theater located at 212 York Street features both film formats with Dolby Digital sound capability. Additionally, both facilities support screenings in all digital media formats.
