Converting files written in Office 2007
As more people migrate to Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility is an issue when sharing files. The newest version of Office has a new default file format that cannot be read by users with older versions of Office. For example, if a student writes a paper using Office 2007 and submits it electronically via the classes server to a faculty member who uses an older version of Office- they will be unable to open the document. In order to improve compatibility we are encouraging users to save documents in older file formats so they can be read more easily. However, we also encourage users of Office 2003 and 2004 to download the compatibility tools from Microsoft in order to guarantee the ability to read Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files authored in version 2007.
Microsoft has made conversion tools available for both the Windows and Mac versions of Office. Please follow the links below to download the appropriate conversion utilities. If you need assistance, please contact your local IT support provider.
For Mac users please download the Office Open XML converter. Click here to download.
For Windows users, please download the Office Compatibility Pack. Click here to download.
