Technology information for new and returning faculty
From a technology perspective, this is a very exciting institution and there are many programs and initiatives in place to assist you in infusing technology with teaching, learning, and research.
This document outlines some basic issues as you get settled, as well as some pointers to connect you with the appropriate units within ITS to help you get on with your job of teaching. Faculty members in the arts and sciences that have questions or problems with technology should send email to faculty.support@yale.edu.
The basics
At the very basic level, all full-time teaching faculty in FAS at Yale are provided with:
- A network connection
- An email account
- Access to the course management system (and support)
We encourage faculty to use laptop computers on campus and have developed a set of recommended standards.
Technology planning
Each department in Arts & Sciences has a Departmental Technology Committee. This committee works with ITS to deliver a range of institutional services. The committee also partners with the AM&T FASIT program to develop a technology plan that identifies any language or discipline-specific needs which may require specialized support. A good place to start is to have a conversation with your departmental chair to learn more about your local committee and technology plan. All requests for new software or hardware should be directed to your departmental technology committee.
Faculty of Arts & Sciences IT Support Program
The Faculty of Arts & Sciences IT Support Program should be your single point of contact for all questions related to technology services on campus. This office consists of a centralized support staff. We use a distributed support model to provide end-user support for faculty computers. This means that if you submit a question or problem to faculty.support@yale.edu, some one will be in contact, usually the same day, and if necessary will come to your office to consult with you. Support includes hardware and software troubleshooting, security issues, as well as assistance with networking problems for the Mac, Windows, and Linux/Unix platforms.
Instructional support: Classes*v2
All new faculty have space on the institutional course web-server, Classes*v2 (classesv2.yale.edu). This service is maintained by the Center for Media Initiatives (CMI). The CMI has support staff available to help people get started using our next-generation course management system. If you have questions or need assistance getting started with Classes*v2, please send email to classes2@yale.edu.
Returning faculty can continue to use the original classes.yale.edu or the new Classes*v2. To learn more about new features or moving your course web site, please send email to either classes@yale.edu or classes2@yale.edu.
The AM&T Instructional Technology Group is available to consult with faculty that are either just getting started, or want to incorporate multimedia/digital resources into their course web site or classroom presentation. For more information, please refer to the ITG website or call them at 432.7800.
Using technology in the classroom
There are over 100 classrooms on campus that have facilites for multimedia presentations. All classrooms have at least one live network connection. If you would like to use your laptop in the classroom, it is best to practice in the space you will be using in order to familiarize yourself with the equipment. Classroom Technology & Event Services group can provide demonstrations of facilities by appointment. For more information regarding installed technology in classrooms please visit their website or send email to classroom.support@yale.edu.
Support for research environments
If your work at the University involves a laboratory or other facility with multiple machines used in research there are several options available for IT support. Please refer to our outline of research support services for more information.
And if there's anything else you need..
...please feel free to send email to faculty.support@yale.edu and we will refer you to the appropriate unit of Academic Media & Technology for assistance.
