Go to the Yale Software Library and download the client software. Installation documentation is available as well.
You can choose to run scheduled backups or manual backups. If you choose manual, set a reoccurring meeting on your calendar to remind you to open the backup client software and run the backup. We recommend daily backups. For scheduled backups follow the instructions in the installation guide.
It is a good idea to check your backup every few weeks, click check my backup tool.

7. When do my files automatically get backed up?
- Answer:
-
Scheduled backups occur between 5:30 PM and 11:30 PM, when the network traffic is low. Laptops can be scheduled for backup between 12:00 PM and 3:30 PM. The backup will not run if the computer is off or in power save mode.

8. How can I be sure that my scheduled backups are running every day?
- Answer:
-
You can check to see if your backup has completed successfully by going to Check my backup or select “Check my TSM Backup” under the security menu in PC Amigo.
On this page it will show the results of the most recent SCHEDULED backup (Completed, Missed, or Failed). You will also see the date of the last completed backup for each file space backed up. For the most recent MANUAL backup choose the link for manual backup history.

9. For more specific information on your entire backup, including errors, what file should I check?
- Answer:
-
For scheduled backups, complete information about every file backed up is recorded in your scheduler log file. To view this file on a PC, double click on My Computer, and then double-click on each of the following in sequence:
Windows: c:/Program Files - Tivoli - TSM - baclient - dsmsched.log
Mac: users/active user/library/logs/Tivoli/tsm/dsmsched.log
The log file will show you the details of all scheduled backup activities. Scroll to the bottom of the file (or press Ctrl + End to go directly to the end of the file) and look for the section that summarizes the most recent backup. It will look something like the text below:
- 08/02/2006 20:08:01 --- SCHEDULEREC STATUS BEGIN
08/02/2006 20:08:01 Total number of objects inspected: 51,330

As long as you see the line indicated in bold above, your backup completed successfully on the date indicated.
Keep in mind that only new or updated files will be backed up, so 'objects inspected' will normally be much larger that 'objects backed up'. Also, do not worry when you see a total under 'objects failed'. Certain operating system files are in use by your computer at all times and cannot be backed up. Unless this number is extremely large, this is normal. To see which files failed, you can scroll up through the file to view the detail listing of every file that the system attempted to back up.

10. How do I reset my backup password?
- Answer:
-
After your Central Backup TSM account has been registered, please go to Check my backup and use the "Password Setup Utility" to define your password on the TSM server. Once your password has been setup, you can use the TSM Backup Client to change your password as frequently as you want.
When you change your Password with this method, you must launch the TSM client and retype your password
- Open your TSM Backup Client
- Select Utilities from the menu and select "Change Password"
This operation will change the password on the server and the local encrypted password on your computer. If for any reason your computer's TSM password differs from the one we keep on our TSM server, you will need to use Central Backup's Password Setup Utility to reset it once more. Always keep your TSM password private to prevent someone else from "restoring" your data to their machine.

11. Why should I upgrade my TSM backup client?
- Answer:
-
New versions offer increased efficiency (for you or the network), enhanced features, greater reliability and fewer bugs. Even if you aren't having any problems, if you upgrade other programs or system software, you might suddenly find TSM not working. Using a newer version of the TSM software often fixes these problems. For the latest version of the TSM software, check the Yale Software Library.

12. What criteria does central backup use to back up a file or directory?
- Answer:
-
Tivoli Storage Manager backs up a file only if the file has changed since the last backup, or whenever a client requests a backup. Tivoli Storage Manager considers a file changed if any of the following is true:
- The date last modified is different
- The file size is different
- The file owner is different
- The file permissions are different
