ISS NEWS • ISS has just posted our Chauncey post-doc announcement for 2010-2011, please see the Fellowships page for more information. • Grand Strategy has a new logo, designed by Prof. Charles Hill:
-
On the left is a Doric column capital representing Sparta, a
land power, governed by an aristocracy, traditional,
prudent, militaristic, informed Aristotles male principle.- On the right is an Ionic capital representing Athens, a sea power, governed democratically, progressive, activist, humanistic, informed by the female principle. - The design is taken from the frontispiece to Hobbess 1634 translation of Thucydidess Peloponnesian War, a manual for statecraft, and a possession for all time. - Aristotles Politics points to a combination of these two politics and principles, continually adjusted for balance in response to specific cases, as the best possible strategy. • An article on Studies in Grand Strategy appeared in the Wall Street Journal on December 20, 2008: "Where Policy Makers Are Born" • The Yale Daily News published an article about The Public Conversation with John Negroponte '60 held Monday September 21, at the Greenberg Center. It can be read here. |
