The Woolsey Hall Organ (Newberry
Memorial Organ) was built in 1901 by Hutchings, improved mechanically and almost
doubled in size in 1915 by Steere, and entirely rebuilt and greatly enlarged
in 1928 by the Skinner Organ Company. Consultants
were Harry B. Jepson, university organist, and G. Donald Harrison.
One of the largest most outstanding instruments of this period, it has
been kept in excellent playing condition and is utilized throughout the academic
year for student organ recitals, organ crawls, gala events and concerts.
It is maintained by the Associate Curators of Organs, Joseph F. Dezeda,
and Nicholas Thompson-Allen.

The string organ
is available on all manuals and pedal, the expression being operated from the
pedal controlling the division
upon which the String Ensemble is drawn. When drawn on the Great or the Pedal, the expression
is controlled by the
Orchestral swell
shoe. All unison stops are two ranks;
each extends to CC.
The present English Horn and Trumpet
Harmonique were installed by Skinner in 1931. In the same year the original
32’ Bombarde resonators, made of
wood, were replaced with resonators of metal.
