Bill Carter

Bill Carter is the founder and leader of the Presbybop Quartet. In his "day gig" he serves as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Clarks Summit, PA, where he has served for the past nineteen years. He is an accomplished jazz pianist and composer of over one hundred tunes, having studied and performed with noted jazz artists such as Phil Woods, Dave Brubeck, Bob Brookmeyer, Jimmy Knepper, and Jim McNeely. He is the editor of Swing a New Song for the Lord: Resources for Jazz Worship, a collection of printed music that was the result of a Worship Renewal Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. Bill has written, arranged, and produced all the music on the Presbybop Quartet's albums: Faith in a New Key, Dancing Day, Fragile Incarnation, Stand On Your Head, John According to Jazz, Welcome Home, and Psalms Without Words. A former trustee of Princeton Theological Seminary, Rev. Carter has represented his denomination by preaching seven times on The Protestant Hour (now called Day 1), an ecumenical radio ministry that reaches two million listeners per week. His sermons and articles have appeared in Journal for Preachers, Presbyterian Survey, Preaching, Lectionary Homiletics, The Christian Ministry, and Best Sermons 7 (HarperCollins, 1994). He has published five books of sermons: No Box Seats in the Kingdom, Water Won't Quench the Fire, Speaking of Stewardship, Praying for a Whole New World, and A Christmas Quartet. In the past decade, the Presbyterian Church (USA) has appointed him as a mentor to new pastors.
