Yale Organ Week 2007 Recital Series

Monday, June 11.  Yale Organ Walk.

Yale Organ faculty Thomas Murray and Martin Jean perform three short programs on three Yale organs beginning at 8 pm in Dwight Chapel (67 High St.). Artists and audience will proceed on foot to Battell Chapel (College & Elm), where the recital will resume at around 8:45, and from there to Woolsey Hall (College & Grove) at 9:30 -- a unique opportunity to see and hear three extraordinary Yale instruments, and two extraordinary Yale organists, in the course of a single evening.

Wednesday, June 13.  Guest Artists in Recital.

Delbert Disselhorst, John Schwandt, and Ann Elise Smoot perform on two of the University's instruments beginning at 8 pm in Dwight Chapel and continuing at around 9 pm in Woolsey Hall.

Thursday, June 14.  Student Organ Recital.

Some of the nation's most gifted undergraduate organists play on two of the University's instruments beginning at 8 pm in Dwight Chapel and continuing at around 9 pm in Battell Chapel.

Friday, June 15.  Student Organ Recital.

Some of the nation's most gifted undergraduate organists play on the magnificent NewBerry Organ in Woolsey Hall at 8pm.

Delbert Disselhorst is professor of music and chair of the organ department at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.  Known as a recitalist in the US, Canada, Europe and Korea, he has released two CDs: Organ Works of Rorem and Pinkham on the Arkay label, and Harmonische Seelenlust of G.F. Kauffmann on the Pro Organo label.

Martin Jean, professor (adjunct) of organ at Yale, has performed widely throughout the U.S. and Europe, and is known for his wide reportorial interests.  Recipient of numerous awards, he has recorded The Seven Last Words of Christ by Tournemire and the complete six symphonies of Vierne in Woolsey Hall for Loft Recordings, with a recording of the organ symphonies of Marcel Dupré forthcoming on the Delos label. He directs the Yale Institute of Sacred Music.

Thomas Murray is Yale University Organist, and professor (adjunct) of organ and chair of the program in organ at Yale.  He maintains a busy international touring schedule on five continents, and has recorded extensively, specializing in music of the Romantic period. In 2003 he was awarded an FRCO diploma honoris causa by the Royal College of Organists in England.

John Schwandt is a nationally acclaimed performer in demand as a clinician, recitalist, leader of hymn festivals, organ consultant, and silent film accompanist, particularly known for his skills as an improviser. He is associate professor of organ and director of the American Organ Institute at the University of Oklahoma.

Ann Elise Smoot performs regularly throughout the UK, the United States and Europe, with a repertoire ranging from the 14th century to the present day. Passionate about injecting new idea into the organ world at large, she has been involved in founding several educational and scholarly initiatives and directs the St. Giles Junior Organ Conservatoire, a unique program in the UK for teenage organists.
