Yale Schola Cantorum will continue its Sung Evening Prayer series on December 10 at 6 pm in St. Mary's Church. James O'Donnell, the distinguished Master of Choristers and Organist at Westminster Abbey, will guest conduct music spanning several centuries by Grier, Byrd, Martin, MacMillan, Palestrina, JS Bach, Guerrero, and Williams. Robert A. Rimbo, of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New York and Bishop of the ELCA Metropolitan New York Synod, will offer the homily.
Under James O'Donnell's
twelve-year leadership, the Westminster Cathedral Choir consolidated its considerable reputation and won several accolades for its recordings, notably the prestigious Gramophone "Record of the Year" award in 1998. The Choir's performances on the Hyperion label have drawn lavish critical praise for their "vividly graphic word painting" (The Daily Telegraph) and
"...a broad rich landscape of astonishing power and beauty" (Classical Express), while the Mail on Sunday deemed "
A Christmas Caroll from Westminster Abbey" to be
"the best Christmas CD by a country mile."
Yale Schola Cantorum, founded in 2003 by Simon Carrington, is a 24-voice chamber choir specializing in music from before 1750 and from the last hundred years. Masaaki Suzuki is the choir's director.
The Sung Vespers at St. Mary's Church is free and open to the public.
