The Arrival of Opus 55 / (watch)

Installation begins in Marquand Chapel

ongoing throughout summer 2007

The commission and installation of a new pipe organ constitute a rare event in the life of an institution. Taylor and Boody's Op. 55 arrived on June 6, and the crew from their shop in Staunton, VA were in New Haven all summer installing and voicing this beautiful new instrument, designed specifically for the newly renovated Marquand Chapel, representing the culmination of a process begun eight years ago with the planning of the renovation of Sterling Divinity Quadrangle.

The new instrument is tuned in the meantone temperament, in accordance with common practice in seventeenth century Europe. It will be one of the very few meantone organs in North America, and one of the largest. More information about historical tunings can be found here.

We will inaugurate the organ with a festive series of events beginning in October, 2007.

You can find photographs of the organ's progress on these pages. And don't miss the Taylor and Boody website, where you can see the organ in the Staunton shop, and also its specifications.
