Sacred Spaces of New Haven
About the Project
The photographs in this calendar are a sampling of the more than
100 images by Robert Lisak that will be included in a full-color
book entitled Sacred Spaces in New Haven and its Environs. The text
will be written by Lee M. Smith (M.Div., summa cum laude, Yale University)
and the introduction by editor Jaime Lara (Associate Professor of
Christian Art and Architecture; Chair of the Program in Religion
and the Arts at the Institute of Sacred Music and the Divinity School
of Yale University).
Intended both for general readers and architectural historians,
Sacred Spaces in New Haven will explore the diverse sacred architecture
of the Greater New Haven area, with descriptions and analyses of
forty distinctive churches and synagogues. The book will include
an essay about the biblical design of the city and will provide
walking and driving tours of the sacred sites.
The Yale Institute of Sacred Music has undertaken this project
to showcase New Haven-a richly textured, multiethnic tapestry of
living worship traditions, which offers visitors a varied gallery
of sacred spaces for their inspiration, education, and enjoyment.
