Open Invitation to Ivy Graduate Students
Dear Sociology Graduate Students,
On behalf of the Yale Sociology department I would like to invite you to the First Annual Inter-Ivy
Graduate Sociology Symposium on April 9, 2005.
The idea for this event arose last February from an informal discussion among various student
representatives at the Ivy Graduate Leadership Conference at the University of Pennsylvania. There was
a consensus that, because not all students are able to attend national and international sociology
conferences, there is a pressing need for a greater variety of platforms where sociology graduate
students can present their on-going research. Representatives also agreed that increased interaction
among the Ivies can greatly enhance the sense of academic community as part of our graduate experience.
With these hopes in mind, the idea for an Annual Inter-Ivy Graduate Sociology Symposium was born.
The proposal for hosting this event was welcomed both by the Yale Sociology Department as well as the
Yale Graduate School. More than just a symposium, through this event we hope to: (1) create a platform for
graduate students to present their research, (2) build academic bridges among the Ivy League schools, and
(3) foster a community of emerging scholars in sociology. The Inter-Ivy Sociology Symposium 2005 will
initiate the first of what we hope will become an annual tradition among the Sociology departments of the
Ivies.
I would like to encourage all graduate students at all levels in sociology to participate in this event
and present their research. Papers on all sub-fields are welcome. We hope to form different panels on
topics ranging from gender and ethnicity to social movements and development. (See the
Papers section of the site. More details will follow.)
For more information on the symposium, or if you have any questions or comments, please send an e-mail
to iiss.info@yale.edu.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Molly A. Martinez
