This location is equipped with 24 network docking stations which provide
access to the Yale Campus Network and the Internet from properly configured
laptop computers.
PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR SOUND BEFORE USING YOUR COMPUTER.
Please note: you will need your own phone or ethernet cable.
Also, some power adapters (integrated transformer plugs in particular)
may not fit into the power outlets on the Main Reading Room lamps.
There are two methods of connection:
Method 1: Dial-Up / Modem
Twelve dial-up ports are available in the lamps at the dial-up
table. You will need the following to use them:
-
A modem for your computer (built-in or PC card) and phone cord.
-
A remote access account (PPP, ARA, or terminal dialin) and software from
Yale. Qualifying individuals may obtain accounts at the ITS Accounting
Office at 175 Whitney Ave. There is a charge for this service.
OR
-
A remote access account and software from an Internet Service Provider
such as America On-line. Note: a Yale Toll Authorization Number is
required for toll calls.
To connect:
-
PLEASE TURN OFF YOUR MODEM SOUND (if you're not sure how to turn off your
modem sound, please see our online document at
http://www.yale.edu/iic/modem-silent.html)
-
Connect your phone cord to your modem and the phone jack.
-
Connect power and turn on your machine.
-
Run your standard dial-up (PPP, ARA, or terminal dialin) software.
Note: if you normally dial in from off campus, you may have to
configure your dial-up software so that it dials a 9 before it dials the
access number. For information on how to do this refer to the
documentation that came with your software, or refer to our online
documentation.
Method 2: Ethernet
Twelve ethernet ports are available in the lamps at the ethernet table.
You will need the following to use them:

A machine that has been pre-configured to work with the network access
ports. Students with residential ethernet connections are
automatically
configured; faculty and staff, please take a look at our Instructions for Configuring Roaming
Ethernet. Note that roaming ethernet is available only
to members of the Yale community who are currently paying for a network
connection (either static IP ethernet, PPP or ARA).
-
Windows 95, Windows NT Workstation (version 3.5 or later) or Mac OS
version
7.5 or later ("Open Transport 1.1.2" or later).
-
An ethernet adapter (built-in or PC card) and ethernet cable.
-
An existing Yale Campus Network connection at your office, college, or
dorm room.
