Ethernet Roaming enables a properly configured computer (with an
Ethernet Card) that has been authorized to roam to plug in to the
University's Ethernet network at any of the Network Access Ports around
campus. Roaming is available only to members of the Yale
community who are currently paying for a network connection (either static
IP ethernet, PPP or ARA). Note that students with on-campus Ethernet
connections are normally automatically configured and authorized for
roaming.
Configuring your computer for Roaming
For a machine to roam, its network software must be configured correctly,
that is, it must be set to use DHCP.
Macintosh -- using DHCP
To use DHCP on a Macintosh, you must be using System 7.5.3 or higher, with
Open Transport. Open the TCP/IP control panel, then:
-
select Connect Via Ethernet
-
select Configure using DHCP server
Close the TCP/IP control panel, save changes, and restart your
machine.
Your computer should now be properly configured; continue now with Authorizing
your computer for Roaming.
Windows 95/98 -- using DHCP
Open the Network control panel, and double click on TCP/IP.
- Under the IP Address tag, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
- Under WINS Configuration, select "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution"
- Under DNS Configuration
- select "Enable DNS"
- enter a name for your machine in the Host box
- enter "cis.yale.edu" as the domain
- For DNS Servers, enter
- 130.132.1.9
- 130.132.1.10
- 130.132.1.11
-
For the Domain Suffices, enter
- its.yale.edu
- cis.yale.edu
- yale.edu
Click on OK to close the TCP/IP window, then click OK to close the Network
control panel. Restart your machine. Your computer should now
be properly configured; continue now with Authorizing
your computer for Roaming.
Windows NT -- using DHCP
Open your Network Control Panel, click the Protocols tag, then double-click
the TCP/IP Protocol.
-
Under IP Address
- select your Ethernet adapter
- check "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server".
Under DNS
- enter a name for your machine in the Host box
- enter "cis.yale.edu" as the domain
- For DNS Servers, enter
- 130.132.1.9
- 130.132.1.10
- 130.132.1.11
- For the Domain Suffixes, enter
- its.yale.edu
- cis.yale.edu
- yale.edu
Click OK to close the TCP/IP Properties window, then click Close to close
the Network control panel. Restart your machine. Your computer
should now be properly configured; continue now with Authorizing your computer for Roaming.
Authorizing your computer for Roaming
For a machine to roam, it needs to be authorized to do so. A machine
is eligible to be authorized if:
- It already is using a valid ethernet connection at Yale, or
- Its owner is paying for a PPP or ARA account.
If your computer is eligible, please fill out and submit the form below.
Once we’ve verified that you are eligible to roam, we will set up your
roaming account and send you a confirmation via email.
Note that the form requires that you tell us your
Ethernet Hardware Address; we may also need your current static IP
address. For help on finding your Ethernet Hardware Address or IP
address, select the appropriate link:
