Winter 1996

Dubbed the "Dark Continent" by European colonizers centuries ago, Africa was divided arbitrarily by European imperialists in the late nineteenth century. The recently independent African nations have not fared well in the post-colonial age. Forced to fight for their freedom, many African countries now face increasing religious tensions, poverty, population explosion, foreign debt, governmnetal corruption, and famine. The curent predicaments confronting the governments and peoples of Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria reflect the problems plaguing the entire African continent. These three countries must make a concerted effort to solve their deep-rooted problems before they worsen.
