Housing
Yale students and Peking University students live together as roommates in Building #42, a new residence hall on the Peking University campus. This pioneering living situation provides a valuable opportunity for integrated cultural and language exchange. This is the only regular PKU residence hall that houses both U.S. and Chinese students. Other U.S. students reside in special foreign student areas. Internet connections are available in each room.
Tuition and Room
Yale and Peking University students will pay tuition and room fees to their own universities. Because Yale students earn Yale credit, they pay regular Yale College tuition as well as fees and discounted room charges. Fees from Yale students will cover tuition, double room, field trips, excursions, and one round trip economy/coach airfare ticket. Meal costs are not included.
Airfare
The allowance for airfare will be based on the cost of a ticket from NYC to Beijing to NYC, as determined by Yale. Students who choose to travel from and to different destinations will receive the cost of the ticket, if it is lower than the NYC standard, but will not receive additional funds if the cost is higher.
Meals
There are no meal plans offered at Peking University; however, there are a number of dining halls at which students can purchase individual meals, both Chinese and western style food. The estimated cost for meals at these dining halls for one semester is 5,000 RMB or approximately $620. Students will pay meal costs directly. Students do not pay Yale for meals. Maintaining a vegetarian diet will be challenging and will require some extra effort.
Financial Aid
Financial aid packages can be used to meet the costs of this program. Yale students who receive institutional financial aid should meet with a counselor in the financial aid office to review how the lower cost of meals will affect their financial aid awards. In addition, students on financial aid who select alternate travel should also consult with a counselor.
Insurance
Tuition also includes Koster study abroad medical insurance. The plan covers medical expenses, including hospital room and board, inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, emergency outpatient care, lab and x-rays, inpatient and outpatient mental health, physician office visits and prescription drugs.
Cell Phones
The Program provides Yale students with cell phones and sim cards that work in China, unless you have your own. You will not have a monthly plan, as is common in the U.S. so you will need to recharge your phone minutes occasionally with a China Mobile recharge card. We recommend using this cell phone primarily for domestic calls and using Skype for international calls. Your friends and family outside of China can also call your room phone inexpensively.
