Health Insurance and MEDEX - Changes coming for 2009-10

  • The Light Fellowship encourages (and pays for as needed) all Light Fellows to have health insurance coverage while studying abroad.
  • Yale provides all students with MEDEX at no cost. This is NOT insurance, but it provides many useful services.

Summer Fellows

Summer Fellows Enrolled in the Yale Health Plan (YHP)
Enrolled Yale students who have not opted out of the YHP are covered by the YHP during the summer. For details on coverage and terms, review the Terms and Conditions of the Members Handbook (Students).

The Light Fellowship does not provide YHP-covered students any additional funding for insurance. Students should review the YHP coverage to determine if they need to purchase additional insurance at their own expense from another provider.

Summer Fellows Who Have Opted Out of the Yale Health Plan (YHP)
If you have opted out of the YHP, you should check to see if:
   1) You are covered under a family plan, and
   2) The family plan covers you while you are overseas.

If you are covered by a family plan that covers you while you are overseas, you do not need insurance money from the Light Fellowship.

If you are not covered overseas by any plan, and if your program does not provide insurance, the Light Fellowship will provide funding for you to purchase insurance. However, you must notify us about your need for funding to purchase insurance by the deadline stipulated in your Award Checklist.

We will check if your program includes insurance in their program fees. If it does not, you will have a separate line item for insurance on your Light Fellowship budget.

Fall, Spring, or Year Fellows

If you are not covered overseas by any plan, and if your program does not provide insurance, the Light Fellowship will provide funding for you to purchase insurance. However, you must notify us about your need for funding to purchase insurance by the deadline stipulated in your Award Checklist.

We will check if your program includes insurance in their program fees. If it does not, you will have a separate line item for insurance on your Light Fellowship budget.

Purchasing Insurance for Those Without Coverage Under the YHP or Family Plan
This is a sampling of companies that specialize in health insurance for those going abroad for educational purposes. Because these plans may not cover medical treatment in the US, having other health insurance valid in the US is strongly recommended.
