DESCRIPTION:
The Marshall Scholarships were established by an Act of Parliament in 1953 and commemorate the humane ideals of the European Recovery Programme (Marshall Plan) instituted by U.S. General George Marshall in 1947. The stated objectives of the scholarship are to express the gratitude of the British people to the American people for the Marshall Plan and to promote intellectual, personal, and cultural exchange between the United States and the United Kingdom. The scholarships are funded by the British government and are administered in the U.K. by the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission and in the U.S. by the British Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the eight regional Consulates-General.
ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA:
Up to forty Marshall Scholarships are awarded annually to U.S. citizens for two years of post-graduate study in any discipline leading to the award of a British university degree. Third-year extensions are granted on a limited basis for strong academic reasons. For the awards tenable from October 2009, eligible candidates must have graduated from their undergraduate institution after April 2006. The qualities that selection committees seek in Marshall Scholars are described in the following statement:
In appointing Scholars the selectors will look for distinction of intellect and character as evidenced both by their scholastic attainments and by their other activities and achievements. Preference will be given to candidates who combine high academic ability with the capacity to play an active part in the life of the United Kingdom university to which they go, and to those who display a potential to make a significant contribution to their own society. Selectors will also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic program. (from Rules for Candidates.)
Applicants who are current students must receive endorsement from their current academic institution; if not currently a student, applicants may receive endorsement from their employer. Yale endorsement is given by the Yale Committee for the Marshall Scholarship and coordinated by the Office of International Education and Fellowship Programs (IEFP). Following institutional endorsement, candidates apply to the region in which they have their legal residence, or in which they are full-time students (Yale is in the Boston region). After examining the applications, Regional Committees invite selected candidates for personal interviews in mid-November.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT:
Interested applicants should schedule an appointment with Kate Dailinger, Associate Director for UK Fellowships, 203-432-8685. No appointments made through email.
