Barry Fellowship Alum Spotlight

Christine Nguyen, 2007 Barry Fellow

Christine Nguyen, MC '09 is a Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology major from Los Angeles. She is a freshman counselor, an undergraduate admissions student recruitment coordinator, and a volunteer at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. She is also active in the Asian American Students Alliance and the Vietnamese Students Association.

Her summer on the Barry Fellowship:
"I spent my summer on the Barry Fellowship in Vietnam where I conducted a public health research project on the correlation between HIV/AIDS and human trafficking. I would wake up at six a.m., have breakfast, and take a motorbike ride from my apartment to work. I would coordinate meetings, attend meetings and conferences with international NGOs, and meet with the founder and director of my host NGO to discuss the progress of my work. The daily activities varied because I had to travel to rural parts of the country or public hospitals to collect data. I often had lunch with everyone who worked at the NGO because culture really fosters a sense of community at the work place. I would get home anywhere between 6-7pm and go for a jog before dinner. At night, I would hang out with the locals. It was fantastic!"

How she chose her project:
I was interested in the topic and developed the project with a former Yale World Fellow whose NGO addressed these two issues.

Her recommendations for students applying to the Barry Fellowship:
Be open to change.

How her summer influenced her future plans:
Living in a developing country helps you understand your world from a different perspective. Hopefully, this new perspective can shape your character in a positive way and help you realize what you can contribute to better society. After that summer in Vietnam, I've decided that I want to go back and continue public health research. I've expanded my network since my last visit and am currently collaborating with a medical school in Ho Chi Minh City. I hope to address health disparities in Vietnam in the future.
