Profiles of Current Students

Ying Cao graduated from Peking University in China with a B.A. in Economics. When she was in college, she came to New Haven as an exchange student in the Yale summer program. That wonderful experience convinced her to return to Yale as an IDE graduate student. At Yale, she worked as a teaching fellow in the East Asian Department, and was also a research assistant for professors at the Economic Growth Center and the School of Management. She feels enriched by those experiences, and more determined to continue with her strong interest in International Economics and Finance. Ying is excited about her future when she plans to put all the academic tools she has learned into practice. She hopes to pursue related financial work, and then serve in the Chinese government. Ying would like to thank all her colleagues for the movie nights and the IDE concerts, and she wishes them the very best. 

Kivanc Cubukcu came to Yale after his graduation from Bogazici University in Istanbul with a B.A. in Economics. At Yale, he focused on institutional change and their effects on development. He enjoyed the international environment at Yale, learned so many interesting things about different cultures that he is not sure if he can remember all of it, but will not forget his IDE vocabulary. In the near future, he wants to go back to Turkey and do something substantial in the name of development. Kivanc wishes all the best to his wonderful friends, wherever they will be.

Joanna Jeon received a B.A.H in Economics with Chancellor Dunning Award from Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. Joanna’s interest in public policy and economic development has been stimulated by taking classes in the Schools of Management and Law. She feels enriched by the formal academic tools she learned within classrooms and practical experience gained as an academic editor of Yale Economic Review. After graduation, she plans to pursue a higher education in public policy. Joanna would like to thank all IDE colleagues and faculty for making her year at Yale a blissful one. 

Namrata Kala completed her BA (honors) Economics from Lady Shriram College, Delhi University in 2005. She subsequently spent one year working for a non-governmental organization in rural development before coming to Yale for the IDE program in 2006.  She has been expanding her academic horizons at Yale, with classes at the School of Management and Forestry, and has enjoyed being part of the multicultural environment here. She considers this year as her most educational and memorable so far, and plans to work in the development sector after graduation. She thanks her classmates for a year of academic exchange, pranks, and margaritas, and hopes to see them all soon. 

Eiji Kozuka received a M.A. in Environmental Economics from Hitotsubashi University in 1998, and joined Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which implements official development assistance projects. He worked in Myanmar (Burma) as JICA’s assistant resident representative from 2000 to 2003, and in Tokyo as a senior program officer responsible for basic education projects in Asia from 2004 to 2006. Through these experiences, he established his future goal to contribute to poverty reduction, and came to Yale to study development economics. After graduation, he will go back to JICA to practice what he learned at IDE. 

Christoph Lassenberger is an Austrian Fulbright Scholar in the Master's Program in International and Development Economics. Before coming to Yale, he worked in the Department for Sub-Saharan Africa at KfW Development Bank in Frankfurt. Christoph grew up in Germany, fulfilled his social service requirement in Scotland, volunteered in France, and studied in Italy, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Laurea degree in European Economics from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata". Having been to many countries in North and West Africa, Christoph plans to pursue a career in international development. 

 Xuanyi Li received her B.S in Urban and Regional Planning in Peking University in 2005.  She came to Yale and pursued her joint degree of IDE and Environment Management. Before coming to the United States, Xuanyi had several internships of Urban Planning for various regions and cities in China, including Beijing, Qingdao, and Tibet. In 2006 summer, she worked for the Natural Resource Defense Council in New York City for Smart Growth and Green Building research. After completing her degrees at Yale, Xuanyi wishes to further contribute to the research and practice of sustainable development and Green Building. 

Ming Wee Lian came to Yale after obtaining his BSc in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Sorely missing the vibrancy of London in quiet New Haven, he immersed himself in a world of novels, comic books, and movies, and emerges from his intellectual sojourn with an M.A. in International and Development Economics. He considers himself very fortunate to be graduating today, and is now heading back home to Singapore to serve his government. He will miss his wonderful friends at Yale, and promises them a warm welcome should they ever visit Singapore!  

Chiew Chueng Lim graduated with a Bsc in Economics from University College, London. Before coming to Yale to pursue a Masters in International and Development Economics, she did a summer internship with the Economic Development Board of Singapore where she'll be returning to work upon graduation. The past year at Yale has been memorable, and she would like to thank her classmates for the movie nights, grueling homework sessions and the laughs they've shared. 

Richard Ludlow, from Modesto, CA, enrolled in the IDE program while completing his BA in Economics from Yale College.  At Yale, Richard served as Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Economic Review, a student-run journal of popular economics.  Richard plans to pursue an MBA and draw upon his education in development to pursue entrepreneurial solutions to poverty and health disparities in developing nations.  

Kartik Ramachandran graduated with Honors in Economics from Grinnell College in 2004. After college, he worked for a year with the New America Foundation, a think tank in Washington, D.C., on spectrum policy; did some math at MIT; and returned to Mumbai, India, to work with an urban microfinance startup. After graduating from the IDE program, Kartik will return to Mumbai to work with the Development Strategy Group, a new division of India’s second-largest bank, ICICI Bank, to expand their initiatives in delivering financial services to low-income markets.  

Gokay Saher is a citizen of Turkey with honorary citizenships of Russia and Australia. After receiving his B.A. in Economics from Bilkent University, Gokay worked on several personal projects before deciding to make a come back to the academic world. After receiving his degree, Gokay is planning to decide what to do next in order to end his state of confusion.

Yu-hsuan Su graduated from National Taiwan University in 2006 with a B.A. in economics, ranking in the top 5% of her class. She thanks God for bringing her to Yale, where the comprehensive curriculum, the inspiring faculty, and the lovely IDE colleagues helped her strengthen her analytical and quantitative skills in economics. The diverse opportunities for academic and extracurricular pursuits at Yale, from seminars to home rehabilitation work for Hurricane Katrina victims, also broadened her perspectives about the world. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in economics and to contribute to society through her research.  

Meng Joo Teo came to Yale’s IDE program after receiving a B.S.E in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She missed badly her undergraduate days in Michigan, but thankfully had wonderful IDE course mates who brought her endless joy and laughter. She was also glad to immerse in the very enriching academic environment at Yale. Now, she fondly remembers her squash and volleyball sessions, IDE movie nights, and student life in general, as she heads home to Singapore to work for the Economic Development Board on big and important matters (hopefully).  

James Walker received a Bachelor's Degree in Earth Science from Rice University in 2006.  At Yale, he enjoyed taking class in the Economics Department, the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and the School of Management. James is looking forward to a career in economic consulting in Africa or the Caribbean.  

Xinwei Zhang graduated from Fudan University with a B.A. in Environmental Science and a second major in Law.  In 2005, she came to Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies to further her study in environmental management, where her interest in economics grew. She joined the joint degree program with IDE in 2006.  Last summer, Xinwei worked in the Division of Sustainable Development at the United Nations, and completed in-depth research on financing sustainable development projects. After graduation Xinwei plans to continue her effort in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in developing countries.  

Ziqin Zheng is a citizen of China. She graduated from the University of Nottingham with a BSc. in Economics in 2006. At Yale, she specialized in international and development economics, while taking courses in Yale School of Management to strengthen her knowledge in finance. The stimulating lectures, memorable talks, great art events and all wonderful people she met has made her stay at Yale a rewarding experience. Gaining excellent training and new insights, she is ready to embark on a career in the business and financial world.
