Profiles of Current Students Helene Ba graduated from University College London with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Economics. During her time at Yale, she interned at the UNDP and went to India with the School of Management working as a consultant for Seva Mandir. After graduation, she will start a career in international development as an Overseas Development Institute Fellow. Vidur Chopra graduated from Delhi University in India with a degree in Economics, and then worked for two years in the field of youth development and leadership as well as education assessment and research. One of his aims while applying to the IDE program was to diversify his academic interests which he now believes Yale has successfully fulfilled. While at Yale, he pursued courses in Economics, Political Science and at the Forestry and Medical Schools. As part of the course work for one of his classes, Vidur traveled to Syria as an assistant consultant for UNICEF, an experience that he cherishes and values greatly. In the near future, he wants to work in the field of international development and then wishes to pursue a Ph.D in Public Policy and focus his work on emergency and conflict settings. Vidur leaves Yale enriched and fueled with ambition. He is extremely grateful to his peers and instructors who challenged and yet inspired him tremendously. Khadija El Mediouri attended the American University of Paris where she earned a B.A. in Economics and Business Administration and a Minor in Applied Mathematics. Khadija continues to explore the development challenges pertaining to the Middle East and North Africa and hopes to pursue further studies in Public Policy. In the meantime, she will be returning to Morocco to work on a rural development project in partnership with the Islamic Development Bank. Rebecca Lee Funk graduated with high distinction from the Pennsylvania State University with degrees in Accounting, Science, and Philosophy. Her experiences working at a Tanzanian orphanage ignited an interest in poverty alleviation, leading her to Yale for a thorough schooling in economic development. Next year, Rebecca will remain at Yale to pursue a Master in Environmental Management and develop her research on malaria eradication in East Africa. She feels humbled and enriched to have spent the past year with her IDE colleagues and looks forward to visiting them as they disperse throughout the world. Chloe Yuk Ting Heung. After receiving an undergraduate degree in International Business from the University of Hong Kong, Chloe came to Yale with the scholarship from the Rotary Foundation. Thanks to the IDE program, she was able to advance her academic knowledge in Economics and Development while working as an intern at the UNDP. In the near future, she hopes to contribute to the development of the emerging markets. Yijing Huang received a B.Sc. degree in Economics from the University of Toronto in Canada. With her strong interest in development economics, she came to the IDE program to develop further knowledge and expertise in this field. At Yale, she took multi-disciplinary courses from the Schools of Management and Public Health and also worked as a research assistant for UNDP. All these experiences have allowed her to apply economics tools to address specific issues in international development and she finds this learning process extremely valuable. She hopes to engage in a career that will promote the economic and social welfare of families and communities, especially those in the developing world. Kotaro Iwasaki graduated from Tokyo University with a B.A. in Law. After working at the Ministry of Finance for three years, he came to Yale University to pursue a deeper understanding of International and Development Economics. Next year, Kotaro hopes to obtain a Master’s Degree in East Asian Studies at Yale University. After one more year at Yale, Kotaro will return to Japan to use his knowledge to contribute to his country’s economic and financial progress. Brian Kelly graduated cum laude from the University of California San Diego with a B.A. in Economics. After working for one year with the Pathways of Women’s Empowerment Research Consortium in Egypt, he moved to Switzerland to work in algorithmic stock trading for another year before coming to Yale. At Yale, Brian sharpened his economic analysis skills, built upon his Arabic language capabilities, and served as a GPSS Senator. In his free time Brian enjoys long distance running and open water swimming. Following graduation Brian plans to continue working with both the public and private sectors in international development and finance. Seon-ah Lee graduated from Ewha Womans University in Seoul with a B.A. in Mass Communications and Journalism. After working for 8 years at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea, she came to Yale to pursue a deeper understanding of International and Development Economics. After graduating from the IDE program, she will go to China for two years on a Chinese language training program and then return to the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Hao Liu graduated with a First-Class Honor Degree in Business Mathematics and Statistics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Having spent five years in Singapore as a full-scholarship holder and the subsequent three years in the United Kingdom, he sees the importance for China of a sophisticated net of financial regulation and economic policy in this shrinking world. After going through the vigorous academic training from IDE, Hao plans to travel globally and work in the field of finance and development and hopes to obtain higher academic degrees in related areas. Chuan-Xin Mok holds a B.Sc. in Economics, Politics and International Studies from Warwick University and will work for the Monetary Authority of Singapore upon graduation. He came to Yale to continue a multi-disciplinary approach to policy study particularly in the area of international finance, taking management, history and international relations classes, and hopes to help build Singapore into a premium financial centre. Apart from academics, Chuan-Xin was also able to pursue interests in art history and religion, broadening his horizons and keeping him sane. He would like to wish everyone in the IDE program the very best. Zi Ming “Joseph” Ng. Joseph graduated with first class honors, dean's list for BSc in Economics from University College London. He has a strong passion for economic growth and policy work. After graduation he is going back to Singapore to serve in the military and the civil service. Akarapol Pipatsatayanuvong received his B.A. in Economics with first class honors from Thammasat University in Thailand. He worked for the Central Bank of Thailand as a junior economist studying Thai political economy and education, and then moved to the Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi UFJ before coming to Yale. Apart from deepening his understanding of International and Development Economics, at Yale he has concentrated his studies in quantitative analysis which is important for his career. In the future, Akarapol wishes to become a lecturer as he has a strong desire to make a contribution toward Thai-student scholarship. Clare Potter graduated from Cambridge University with a B.A. in Natural Sciences. After working in strategy consulting, she came to Yale to pursue further study in International and Development Economics. Her interest in this field has been fostered through involvement in international development projects in a number of countries in Africa and South Asia. Clare has very much enjoyed her experience in the IDE Program and would like to thank everyone who has made her year at Yale such a memorable one. Leila Riahi was born and raised in Iran, moved to Canada at the age of eighteen, and graduated with high distinction from the York University of Canada with honors in Business and Society. After graduation, she came to Yale to pursue a deeper understanding of International and Development Economics. A zealous student, Leila has taken a multi-disciplinary approach to address her interests in sustainable development and economics by taking classes in the Schools of Management and Forestry. While at Yale, in order to gain invaluable experiences in her area of interest, Leila did an internship for the permanent mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations in New York on serious development challenges. She feels enriched by her experience at Yale and is excited about the future when she plans to travel the world, institute change, and practice further development work. Kristina Schapiro graduated from Oxford University with a B.A. in Economics and Management. After completing the IDE programme, she will work for the Monitor Group and subsequently intends to pursue a career and further study in international development. Kristina thanks all her IDE friends for a wonderful year at Yale! Moe Tatara graduated from Keio University in Tokyo with a B.A. in Economics. Her experiences as an intern at the World Bank and field research in Tanzania and Thailand led her to pursue her study at Yale University to deepen her understanding of International and Development Economics. Moe has broadened her view of policy making and sustainable development by taking courses in Economics, Political Science and the School of Management. She feels ready to return to Japan to share her enriched knowledge in the development field. She enjoyed the diversity of backgrounds of IDE students and would like to thank them for such a wonderful year. Ceylan Teoman received a B.A. in Economics from Bosphorus University in Turkey and came to Yale to pursue deeper development work. The IDE Program enriched her knowledge in sustainable development and environmental issues by offering her the opportunity to take classes from different disciplines like the School of Management and also Forestry. After graduating from Yale, which was not only an academic experience but also a source of social richness, Ceylan will go back to Turkey to contribute her economic and development knowledge to the improvement of her country. Luz Maria Sinaia Urrusti Frenk holds a BSc degree in Economics from Tilburg University in the Netherlands, where she graduated cum laude in 2007. Before coming to Yale, she worked as a Consultant for the Mexican government’s development bank BANSEFI. As a master student at the International and Development Economics Program, Sinaia has gathered invaluable knowledge and technical skills which have strengthened her desire to pursue a PhD this year. Her experience at Yale which included meeting, learning, and working with some of the world’s brightest minds has been, above all, truly inspiring. Piang-or Wacharaprapapong. A recipient of the Royal Thai Government scholarship, Piang-or holds a bachelor degree in Economics from Columbia University. She will be joining the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs after graduating from Yale. Dongyu “Eddie” Wang graduated from Columbia University with bachelor’s degrees in Economics-Mathematics and East Asian Languages and Cultures with a disciplinary concentration in economics. He came to the International and Development Economics Program directly after his graduation from Columbia University in order to continue his studies in economics. After graduation, Eddie hopes to apply his knowledge of economics and development in the progression of his career. Danxu Yang joined the IDE program after receiving her B.Sc in Economics from the London School of Economics. She missed the vibrancy of London badly, but is extremely thankful to meet fascinating IDE classmates from diverse backgrounds who made her stay at Yale a rewarding and memorable experience. Prior to her study at Yale, Danxu completed several internships with various press groups in China and Singapore. Aspired to become a journalist, she will join the Singapore Press Holdings after graduation, and she is looking forward to extend her knowledge in economics and development in economic journalism. Yiwen Zhu comes from China. She graduated from Oxford University with both a BA and a MMath degrees in Mathematics and Statistics. This long journey to New Haven has been extremely rewarding and worthwhile to her. The IDE program exactly fulfills her academic interest in development economics, and studying in a leading American university has also enriched her life experiences enormously. On getting this degree, she would like to thank her parents for their constantly generous support. She also appreciated the company of other IDE classmates. She wishes them the very best in the future.
