Welcome to the Yale 2013-2014 United Way campaign

Each year, faculty and staff across the University partner with United Way of Greater New Haven to improve lives and reduce the educational disparities that challenge our region. For a fourth year, Yale’s campaign will focus on our most vulnerable citizens – our children.

In the Greater New Haven region, nearly 14,000 children under age 18 live below the poverty level; nearly 10,000 live in the city of New Haven. These children face unbelievable odds against their future success: poor nutrition, poor quality or no child care, and little stimulation or educational preparation that help to build readiness for education. Typically, when they start school, they are already years behind their peers, and most never catch up.

The 2013-2014 Campaign will focus on efforts to “Give Every Child a Chance.” While you can give to any organization of your choice, if you can, please give generously to this effort, which will fund organizations – many of which have strong Yale connections – that help change the odds for children and families in our community.

Last year, contributions from Yale University faculty and staff, together with donations from other supporters in the community, achieved the following results:

  • Nearly 800 young children attended high-quality early care and education programs
  • More than 5,600 school-age youth participated in high-quality after-school programs or received mentoring, tutoring, or counseling services
  • More than 8,000 nutritious meals were served to children and youth during the summer to prevent childhood hunger
  • More than 450 parents benefited from learning more about child development and how they can best support their child’s learning

The building blocks for good lives and strong communities

Along with early childhood education and helping all students succeed, United Way of Greater New Haven focuses on promoting financial stability and independence, as well as improving people’s health. United Way seeks to build a foundation for lifelong success by supporting programs that ensure better opportunities for children and families in our community.

Have you considered giving at the Leadership Level?
