Policies & Procedures
Yale University's employee referral program, Refer Some Valuable People (RSVP), provides an opportunity for current employees to refer talented candidates for hard-to-fill positions that are bonus-eligible.

Employee Eligibility
- Yale University M&P, C&T and S&M staff are eligible to participate in the Employee Referral Program.
- Contract/Temporary/Casual employees, faculty and students are excluded from making referrals.
- Recruiters, Candidate Development Specialists and HR Generalists are not eligible to receive a referral bonus, but are encouraged to make referrals.
- Hiring Managers are excluded from receiving a referral bonus if their own referral is hired into a position that they supervise or that falls within their reporting line.
- Referring employee must be employed by Yale University at the time of referral and at the time the referred candidate commences employment in order to receive a referral bonus.
- Referring employee must follow program procedures to qualify for referral bonuses.
- Referring employee must not violate non-compete agreements with former employers.
- Referring employee agrees to be available to provide a reference for the referred candidate, as needed.
Referral Bonus
- Referral bonus: $500 for each hire of a successfully referred candidate into any eligible position (posted on the Employee Referral Gateway).
- No limit to the number of referral bonuses an employee can receive.
- No limit to the number of referrals an employee can submit.
- Referral bonus will be paid via the payroll system in the first unprocessed pay period following the referred candidate’s start date.
- Referral bonuses are considered income and will be subject to all applicable taxes.
Referral Candidate Criteria
- Referral bonuses will not be paid for candidates already in the STARS database prior to referral.
- If more than one employee refers the same bonus-eligible candidate, the eligible referral is the one received first.
- Referrals of current Yale University employees are not eligible for referral bonuses. This includes referrals of current staff, faculty, casuals, temps, contractors and consultants.
- Approved referrals are valid for one (1) year after the referral date.
- The referring employee will receive a referral bonus if the referred candidate is hired for any eligible staff positions to which they apply during that year.
- Employees may not use advertising to identify and submit referrals, or submit referrals obtained through job fairs.
Positions Eligible
- Only referrals to ITS and Development jobs are eligible for a referral bonus during the initial phase. ITS jobs are defined as jobs within the ITS organization, and Development jobs are defined as jobs within the Central Development office/organization.
- Referrals for jobs outside of ITS or Development will be accepted but are not eligible for a referral bonus during the initial phase.
- Referrals are accepted at any time, regardless of openings.
- General submissions (not specific to a posted position) are accepted.
Program Oversight & Dispute Resolution
- Employees have the right to appeal any ERP-related decisions in a formal appeals process. The ERP Appeals Form must be completed as part of this process.
- All appeals will be ruled on by the ERP Oversight Committee in the Yale University Staffing and Career Development Department. Decisions of the ERP Oversight Committee are final.
