If your 19-25 year old dependent has graduated from college, this qualifies as a life event and allows you to disenroll your dependent from Yale's medical or dental providers. You must notify the Benefits Office within 30 days from the date of the qualifying event. Coverage continues during the remainder of the graduation month. Effective cancellation date will be at the end of the month that your child graduates.
You must add this qualifying life event within 30 days of the date of your dependent's graduation date using the My Benefits website, which can be accessed through the University portal (www.yale.edu/portal). For instructions, please refer to the My Benefits: Adding a Life Event Quick Guide.
If you have any questions, please contact the Employee Service Center at 203-432-5552.
Can I continue my child's health, dental insurance after graduation?
Yes, if the child is under the age of 25 and financially dependent upon you for support, the child may continue to be covered under your medical plan. Your child must be a full-time student in order to continue to have coverage under your dental plan.
The following documentation will be required in order to maintain coverage for your 19-25 year old dependent:
- Proof of student status (ie; tuition bill, class schedule, letter from registrar's office).
- Top portion of a recent federal tax return identifying the dependent.
If you child does not meet the eligibility requirements listed above, COBRA provisions will apply.
After graduation, does my child remain as a qualifying dependent for the Health Care Reimbursement Account?
As long as your child is a covered dependent under your medical and dental plan, you may submit claims for reimbursement.
