Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

The Yale Flexible Spending Accounts, Administered by ADP, allows you to pay for certain health care and dependent care out-of-pocket expenses with before-tax dollars. You may participate in the Health Care (Medical/Dental) Expense Reimbursement Account and/or the Child/Dependent Care Expense Reimbursement Account. Enroll in a flexible spending account.

Flexible Spending Accounts require annual re-enrollment, and can be elected online during the annual open enrollment period through Employee Self Service. Additional information:

What to do next

You decide how much you want to contribute to each account based on your anticipated expenses for the year. Your contributions will be deducted from your paycheck before taxes are calculated. Use the online calculators below to help you calculate your expenses:

You can contribute up to a maximum of $12,000 to the Health Care (Medical/Dental) Expense Reimbursement Account and up to $5,000 to a separate Child/Dependent Care Expense Reimbursement Account. The web sites below can help you determine eligible expenses:

Submit your claim for reimbursement

When you incur an eligible expense, submit the appropriate claim form and the money will be reimbursed from your account.  The money you contribute to the accounts and the reimbursements you receive from your accounts are never taxed. The forms you will need for reimbursement are listed below:

How does the automatic transfer of claims for Flexible Spending Accounts work?

By selecting "yes" to the automatic transfer feature through employee self-service, you authorize Yale to allow both the medical and dental carriers to submit your copay, deductible, coinsurance and prescription information directly to ADP for reimbursement from your medical/dental reimbursement flexible spending account.

You will not need to submit claims directly to ADP and your reimbursements can be direct deposited to the bank account of your choice. Follow this link to find out more about Flexible Spending Accounts.

When choosing this option, consider the following:

  • You can opt in or out of this feature at any time during the calendar year.
  • Spousal and dependent claims information will also be transmitted each month. However, if you have a dependent child between the ages of 19 and 25 enrolled in the Yale Health Plan and are being charged a dependent surcharge, claims will not be transmitted automatically and you will need to file claims directly with ADP.
  • Over the counter (OTC) medications, vision expenses must be submitted to ADP directly.
  • Do not submit claims for out-of-network medical expenses directly to ADP. These types of expenses
will be sent to ADP via the automatic transfer (if chosen).
  • Your spouse or adult child can opt out of this feature by notifying the Benefits Office. Please allow 2-4 weeks for your request to be procesed by the vendors. Auto Transfer Opt In Out Form.
  • This feature is not available if you are covering a civil union partner under your health insurance or if you are enrolled in a Health Savings Account (HSA) as part of a high deductible health insurance plan.
  • Reimbursements can be delayed up to 60 days due to the timing of when the provider submits the claim to the carrier.
  • Do not select this feature if you also have a health savings account to be used for 2009 deductible expenses as part of your high deductible health insurance plan.
