701 Progressive Discipline

If performance or conduct is unsatisfactory or unacceptable, the supervisor should take action in accordance with the following procedure which may be varied to meet particular circumstances.

  1. Discussion.
The supervisor should meet with the employee to specify the nature of the deficiencies and outline the improvement required. A written record of the date and content of the discussion should normally be kept by the supervisor.
  2. Written Warning.
If unsatisfactory performance continues after opportunity for improvement has been provided, the matter should be discussed again with the employee. The discussion should be accompanied or followed by a written warning. This warning should again specify the nature of the unsatisfactory performance and the improvement necessary and should state a date by which the necessary improvement must be made. A copy of this written warning must be given to the employee, and another copy sent to the Placement and Staff Relations Representative to be retained in the employee's personnel file.
  3. Discharge.
If the discussions and warning fail to bring about the required improvement in performance or conduct, the individual's employment should be terminated. Approval for discharge must first be given by the Director of Personnel Services or the Director of Human Resources for the School of Medicine.
