Old Policy

317 Continuation of Benefits at Termination

(Resignation or discharge)

Resignation or discharge gives rise to a break in service. Most benefits are discontinued as of the date of termination.

Employees who have completed six months' employment and are otherwise eligible for terminal vacation pay receive such pay under the provisions of the vacation policy.

Medical and/or dental insurance coverage in effect at termination continues to the end of the month after the month in which the last premium deduction was taken, or, if no deduction was required, to the end of the month following the month in which the termination took place. Unless the employee has been terminated on grounds of his or her gross misconduct, medical and/or dental insurance may be extended for an additional 18 months at the employee's request. In accordance with Connecticut and federal law, such an extension is contingent upon the terminated employee paying the full cost of the coverage, plus 2% for administrative costs, during the entire period of extension. The extension period ends if the former employee becomes a covered employee under any other group health plan or becomes entitled to Medicare benefits.

Non-contributory life insurance coverage ends on the day of termination. Contributory life insurance, including any "free" coverage, continues to the end of the month after the month in which the last premium deduction was taken, and then ceases unless converted to individual coverage by the employee within the 30-day period following termination. Conversion forms are available at the Benefits Office.

Long-term disability insurance coverage ends on the day of termination.

For further information a terminating employee should consult the Benefits Office.
