eHRAF User Guide: Browse Subjects

In eHRAF (http://ets.umd.umich.edu/e/ehrafe) click on Browse (tab on top of the screen), then click on Browse Subjects to find the Browse Subjects:A-Z index (default) and Browse Subjects Categories (hyperlink in the left-hand margin). Browse Subjects takes you to an extensive index and search system, consisting of 3- and 4-digit OCM subject codes which are designed to help you find a variety of subjects in the texts. The paragraphs in the ethnographic texts are indexed with OCM subject codes, based on the Outline of Cultural Materials. Simply think of OCM subject codes as "indexing" the contents of a paragraph. For example, if a paragraph is about diet, pregnancy, and taboos then you'll find the corresponding OCM subject codes on the top of the paragraph. You can find the entire OCM index system when you click on Browse Subject Categories which includes over 700 subject categories.

The appropriate OCM can be found in the "Browse Subjects: A-Z index" and "Browse Subject Categories." Once you find the OCM subject codes you can launch a search by using either "Browse Subjects" or "Search" (tab on the top of the screen). In "Browse Subjects" you can only search for one OCM at time by clicking on the OCM which takes you to the OCM description. Within the OCM description click on [eHRAF Ethnography Documents with this OCM] to link you to all the paragraphs that contain the OCM. In "Search" you can use search for more than one OCM and combine words with OCMs.
