eHRAF User Guide: Browse Cultures

In eHRAF (http://ets.umd.umich.edu/e/ehrafe) click on Browse (tab on top of the screen) to find the Browse Cultures: A-Z Culture Name Index (default) and the Browse Cultures by Region

Note: If you are interested in a certain region, country, or culture, be sure you go to Browse Cultures by Region (hyperlink in the left-hand margin) to find out if eHRAF has online information on that region or culture.

The full-text in eHRAF consists of documents (mostly ethnographic) and brief cultural summaries compiled into "culture files." In Browse Cultures, if you click on a culture name (or culture file) you will find the following:

  1. an abstract describing the culture file
  2. a table of contents for all the documents (i.e. books, dissertations, journal articles, monographs, etc.) in the culture file
  3. a brief cultural summary (see below)
  4. a list of alternative culture names or ethnonyms (located in the abstract and cultural summary)
  5. a foreign word index.

Tip!!! Print
the "Browse Cultures by Region" list so you have a quick reference as to which cultures are currently included in eHRAF. More cultures are added to eHRAF each spring, so print out the new list!
