Susan Jakes

I am a second year student in modern Chinese history. Much of my research at Yale has centered on the mountain range called Lushan, and its shifting place in landscapes, real and imagined, Chinese and foreign over many centuries.

I was born and raised in New York City and received my B.A. in history from Yale in 1997. Prior to returning to New Haven, I wrote and edited for TIME magazine, and was its Beijing Correspondent from 2002-2007.

Peter Perdue is my advisor. I have also worked closely with Jonathan Spence, John Demos and Annping Chin.
