Brian Noell received his Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Yale in 2006, completing a dissertation entitled “Applied Science: Academic Learning and the Cistercian Enterprise in the Central Middle Ages.” His publications include “Scholarship and Activism at Cîteaux in the Age of Innocent III,” Viator 38 (2007); “Expectation and Unrest among Cistercian Lay Brothers in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries,” Journal of Medieval History 32 (2006); “Origins and Evolution of the Polish Cistercian Monastery of Lad: The Evidence of Beinecke MS 883,” Revue Mabillon 16 (2005); and “Aelred of Rievaulx’s Appropriation of Augustine: A Window on Two Views of Friendship and the Monastic Life,” Cistercian Studies Quarterly 37 (2002).
