Bonnie Martin received her Ph.D. in American History from Southern Methodist University in 2006 and J.D. from the University of Texas in 1977. Formerly a family law attorney, she was a dissertation fellow of the Association of American University Women and was appointed to the board of the Center for Teaching Excellence at SMU. At Yale, she continues her research into the broad social and economic consequences of mortgaging slaves in North American and European colonies and the antebellum United States. She has wide interests in 18th- and 19th-century American social history of Native Americans and Americans of European descent, not only their competition and cooperation over human and natural resources, but also use of religion and music in cross-cultural encounters.
