Introduction

This bibliography of writings about Thomas Hardy was compiled in part fulfilment of an MA dissertation. It is limited to items published in the UK, USA and Canada between 1990 and 1999. It includes book length studies on Hardy, significant book sections, journal articles, essays and lectures, and Ph.D. and MPhil theses. It does not include review articles, entries in dictionaries and encyclopaedias, music, maps, videos, CDs or web pages.

The decision to limit the geographical area and format of the items was reluctantly made on the basis of making the project achievable by a lone compiler.

The period was chosen because, whilst acknowledging work published on the major novels by Sherrick in 1998, it covers a significant gap in the comprehensive recording of Hardy scholarship. Thirty two sources were checked for this compilation including electronic databases, websites, catalogues and printed bibliographies. The bibliography is presented in alpha/author order. Additions fitting the criteria of this bibliography should be sent to jean_e_smith@hotmail.com
