ii. "Doubt and Desire for Faith in Jude" by Takashi Inagaki (Lecturer at Kurume University)
VI. Invited Lecture was given chaired by Shigeyuki Oenoki (Prof. at Konan Women's University)
: "Reconsidering Hardy's Apology" by Suguru Fukasawa (Prof. at Chuo University)

III. Business Meeting was held chaired by Kyoko Nagamatsu (Ass.Prof. at Chuo Univeristy) Suguru Fukasawa (Prof. at Chuo Univeristy) retired from the President of the Thomas Hardy Society of Japan, and Norimitsu Ayuzawa (Prof. at Tokyo Woman's Christian University) was elected. Sugura Fukasawa was elected the Executive Adviser of the Society.

The 42nd Annual Meeting of The Thomas Hardy Society of Japan was held at Tokyo Women's University during October 29-30, 1999 organized by Yutaka Kurono. One hundred members throughout Japan participated in it.
I
i) Seven research papers were read by Noriko Yano, Takashi Inagaki, Yukiko Ishii, Satoko Yoshino, Ken-ichi Tsuji, Kei Matsumoto and Jesse Glass. They dealed withThe Mayor of Casterbridge, The Woodlanders, Jude the Obscure, A Laodician, "To Please his Wife", "Hardy's Ghost" etc. chaired by Prof.Chiharu Kobayashi, Prof. Hideyuki Ide and Shizuko Tsuchiya respectively.
ii) A symposium on "Rhetoric and Outlook on the Universe in Far From the Madding Crowd, was held by Yukio Kaneko, Miho Nishimura and Itsuyo Shimizu chaired by Prof. Yoshitsugu Uchida.
iii) An invited lecture was given by Prof. Takeshi Onodera chaired by the President Prof. Suguru Fukasawa.

At the business meeting chaired by Prof. Norimitsu Ayuzawa, it was decided that the 43rd Annual Meeting will be convened at Bukkyo University in Kyoto during October 27-28, 2000 invited by Prof. Tetsuwo Maekawa.

The 41st Annual Meeting of The Thomas Hardy Society of Japan was held at Kinran College during October 23-24, 1998 organized by Sumiko Inoue. One hundred members throughout Japan participated in it.

i) Two research papers were read by Naoko Funamizu and Sanae Uehara chaired by Prof.Masago Nasu.
- ii) A forum titled "Hardy Conference, past and present" was held by participants of the 1998 Conference including Shin-ichi Nakata and Kaori Tsuda chaired by Prof. Oenoki.
- iii) A symposium was held by Kazuko Takahashi, Hiroaki Kawaguchi and Kensuke Morimatsu and chaired by Prof. Suguru Fukasawa.
iv) An invited lecture was given by Prof. Masatoshi Ogino chaired by Prof Hiroyuki Ide.
II
At the business meeting, President Prof. Suguru Fukasawa was re-elected the President for the next term. The 42nd Annual Meeting will be convened at Tokyo Women's University during October 29-30, 1999 invited by Prof. Yutaka Kurono.
