Research in the Handelsman lab focuses on understanding diversity in microbial communities and their role in infectious disease. In particular, we are interested in understanding the genetic basis for stability of microbial communities, the role of a gut community as a source of opportunistic pathogens, and the soil microbial community as a source of new antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes. Handelsman Lab Graduate Student Caleb Fischer will be presenting a poster at asm2013 and the poster was pre-selected as an "Outstanding Student Poster". Caleb Fischer, Jessica Miles, Jessamina Blum and Jo Handelsman are the authors on the poster. Congratulations, everyone!

Handelsman Lab Undergraduate Ashley Ferguson will officially be attending NYU School of Law in the fall on a full-tuition scholarship as an AnBryce Scholar. Congratulations, Ashley!

Former Handelsman Lab Postdoc Katie Lynn Mason is getting married to Captain Daniel Summers. The wedding takes place on April 20, 2013 in Plymouth, MI at the Inn at St. John's. Congratulations, Katie and Daniel! Katie is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan.

Former Handelsman Lab Graduate Student Brad Borlee and his wife Grace welcome a baby girl. Weighing in at 7 lbs 1 oz, Madison Olivia Borlee was born at the end of January. Congratulations, Brad and Grace! Brad is currently an Assistant Professor of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology at Colorado State University.
