Description of East Timor Mosaic: 1999_2000_mosaic_large.jpg Creation Date: 2/06/03 Contact: Douglas Morton douglas.morton@yale.edu (203)432-3142 Image Description: The 1999-2000 Lansat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) image mosaic of East Timor is comprised of three individual ETM+ images. The original images were purchased from the Tropical Rain Forest Information Center at Michigan State University (http://www.bsrsi.msu.edu/trfic/index.html), and georeferenced to two geocorrected Landsat Image mosaics provided by NASA (http://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl) covering the East Timor region. The mosaic image 1999_2000_mosaic_large.jpg shows many interesting new infrastructural developments in East Timor during the 1990’s. At the eastern end of the island, a large reservoir has been created. The city of Dili, located on the north shore near the middle of the island, was the site of a serious of riots during 1999. In this image, one can see fires in Dili, with grey smoke plumes trailing trailing off to the south-west (see Dili Fires image, this page). The false-color composite shown in this JPEG image was created using bands 4 (near infrared), 3 (red), and 2 (green) for red, green, and blue components of the image, respectively. Vegetation appears red in this image, while rivers appear blue-green, and clouds white. The raster-cell resolution of the original images is 28.5 m. The raster-resolution in the JPEG file has been resampled to 250m to provide highly accurate image in a portable size (less than 1 MB). The original ETM+ images and image mosaic are archived at the Yale University Center for Earth Observation (www.yale.edu/ceo). Landsat ETM+ Images in the 1999-2000 mosaic: 1) MSS (WRS 2 Path 110 Row 67: 08 Sep 1999) Southern and western regions of East Timor. 2) MSS (WRS 2 Path 110 Row 66: 08 Sep 1999) Central region of East Timor 3) MSS (WRS 2 Path 116 Row 66: 18 Aug 2000) Eastern region of East Timor. The accuracy of the georeferencing is documented below. For each scene, the highest RMS value for a reference point is listed. MSS Scene RMS p110_r67 0.65 p110_r66 0.85 p109_r66 0.94
