Description of East Timor Mosaic: 1979_mosaic_large.jpg Creation Date: 2/06/03 Contact: Douglas Morton douglas.morton@yale.edu (203)432-3142 Image Description: The 1979 Lansat Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) image mosaic of East Timor is comprised of three individual MSS images. The original images were purchased from the Tropical Rain Forest Information Center at Michigan State University (http://www.bsrsi.msu.edu/trfic/index.html), and georeferenced to two geocorrected Landsat Image mosaics provided by NASA (http://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl) covering the East Timor region. The mosaic image 1979_mosaic_large.jpg shows a dramatic improvement in data quality over the 1972 mosaic. Note the seasonal differences between the western (9/05/78) and central (7/19/80) regions of the island, as well as the differences in terrain. The eastern image is dated 10/13/79. The false-color composite shown in this JPEG image was created using bands 4 (near infrared), 2 (red), and 1 (green) for red, green, and blue components of the image, respectively. Vegetation appears red in this image, while rivers appear blue-green, and clouds white. The raster-cell resolution of the original images is 57m. The raster-resolution in the JPEG file has been resampled to 250m to provide highly accurate image in a portable size (less than 1 MB). The original MSS images and image mosaic are archived at the Yale University Center for Earth Observation (www.yale.edu/ceo). Landsat MSS Images in the 1979 mosaic: 1) MSS (WRS 1 Path 118 Row 66: 05 Sep 1978) Western region of East Timor. 2) MSS (WRS 1 Path 117 Row 66: 19 Jul 1980) Central region of East Timor 3) MSS (WRS 1 Path 116 Row 66: 13 Oct 1979) Eastern region of East Timor. The accuracy of the georeferencing is documented below. For each scene, the highest RMS value for a reference point is listed. MSS Scene RMS p118_r66 0.66 p117_r66 1.22 p116_r66 0.82
