"I’ve Got a Little List"
SOLO (verse 1):
As suddenly it's happened that our provost must leave Yale,
We've got a little list, we've got a little list
Of things that are quite common here that Oxford can't avail,
And so they will be missed! They really will be missed!
He'll miss that in Yale's colleges you CAN walk on the grass.
He'll miss, when he is in the Bod, the comforts found in Bass.
He'll miss the cheeky way the Yalie Daily makes its calls.
He’ll miss that here at Yale no one's required to go to Balls.
He'll miss the food at Mory's, which is sui generis.
Yes, all of it he'll miss. Yes, all of it he'll miss.
CHORUS:
He's got 'em on the list—he's got 'em on the list,
And all of that he'll miss—that will be surely missed.
SOLO (verse 2):
We're sure that he will miss the question "What does Provost
mean?"
That will be an abyss! Oh, that he'll surely miss!
He'll miss the ever-lively life on the New Haven green.
We may be prejudiced! But that will much be missed!
He'll miss New Haven's ever-frequent closing of the streets.
He'll miss the way the president has twice-a-year retreats.
He'll miss the undergraduates: they're always off to Kenya.
He'll miss Commencement functions (but will make do with
Encaenia).
He'll miss the way the structure here is very centralist.
Yes, all of that he'll miss; that will be sorely missed
CHORUS:
He's got 'em on the list—he's got 'em on the list,
And all of that he'll miss—yes, all of that he'll miss.
SOLO (verse 3):
He'll miss Mayor DeStefano, he'll miss the aldermen.
Oh, that we can't dismiss! Oh, them he'll really miss!
He'll miss the preservationists—to that we say, "Amen!"
We state with emphasis: Oh, them he'll truly miss!
He'll miss a real vacation, all he will get is a vac.
He'll miss the Corporation for they keep us on the track.
He'll miss the folks who praise, in most enthusiastic tones
All colleges but this and every provost but their own.
He'll miss the many meetings Sarah wouldn't let him miss.
Yes, all of that he'll miss. That surely he will miss.
CHORUS:
He's got 'em on the list—He's got 'em on the list;
And all of that he'll miss—Yes, all of that he'll miss.
SOLO (verse 4):
We've wondered whether he will miss the antique SCL.
You've really got the gist! Oh, yes, that's what he'll miss!
Or balancing the budget, while to some that might be hell.
He's such an optimist! We think that will be missed!
He'll miss recruits who'd like to live at Branford on the beach.
They’d love to come to Yale but they do NOT expect to teach.
They'd also like partic’larly to make a lot of dough.
And Andy will regret the way he now can answer, "NO!"
He'll miss recruiting every single great economist.
We know that's what he'll miss. That surely will be missed!
CHORUS:
He's got 'em on the list—he’s got 'em on the list;
And all of that he'll miss—Yes, all of that he'll miss.
He's got 'em on the list—he’s got 'em on the list;
And all of that he'll miss—that surely will be missed.
"Behold the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor"
CHORUS:
Behold the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor!
A personage of noble rank and title—
A dignified and potent officer,
Whose positions are particularly vital.
Defer, defer,
To the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor!
Defer, defer,
To the noble Lord, to the noble Lord,
To the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor!
SOLO (verse 1):
Stolen from the groves of Yale
By a set of curious chances;
Taken while all Elis wail
Lured by Oxford's sweet advances
To a height that few can scale,
Though he dealt with Yale's finances,
Never thought that he'd prevail
Through the Congregations' glances
To an office so upscale
Where the Oxford air entrances—
So adventurous a tale,
Which may rank with most romances.
SOLO:
Stolen from the groves of Yale
CHORUS (overlapping):
Stolen from the groves of Yale
SOLO:
By a set of curious chances
CHORUS (overlapping):
Taken while all Elis wail
SOLO and CHORUS (staggered):
Surely never had a male so adventurous a tale.
CHORUS:
Defer, defer,
To the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor.
Defer, defer,
To the noble Lord, to the noble Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor.
Bow down, bow down,
To the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor.
Defer, defer,
To the noble, noble Lord,
The Vice Oxford Chancellor.
SOLO (verse 2):
Drawn by Oxford's retinue
To a life of dons and cricket
Where he will, an ingénue,
Far from where the Eagles Kick-It
Join a school where, entre nous,
He will face a thorny thicket
And yet when he’s earned his Blue
And he's walked the sticky wicket
He'll come home to Elihu
Where he'll always have a ticket.
He will always be Yale Blue—
He’s an Eli through and through.
SOLO:
Drawn by Oxford’s retinue
CHORUS (overlapping):
Drawn by Oxford’s retinue
SOLO:
To a life of dons and cricket
CHORUS (overlapping):
Join a school where, entre nous,
SOLO and CHORUS (staggered):
He’ll return to Elihu. He will always be Yale Blue
CHORUS:
Defer, defer,
To the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor.
Defer, defer,
To the noble Lord, to the noble Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor.
Bow down, bow down,
To the Oxford Lord Vice Chancellor.
Defer, defer,
To the noble, noble Lord,
The Vice Oxford Chancellor.
