  • What we do

Each year, the Society produces two shows.  At least one is a mainstage production selected from among the fourteen Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Our recent main shows include: The Pirates of Penzance, Princess Ida, and H.M.S. Pinafore.  To see more of our past productions, visit our archives.

  • Seeing our shows

  • Gilbert & Sullivan shows are a treat for all ages. Gilbert's wry wordplay and broad satire will delight adults, and the shows' broad comedy and romantic sense of adventure will keep young children's eyes fixed on the stage.
  • We'd love to see you in our audience: our audiences typically consist of Yale and New Haven community members of all ages.
  • To make sure that you don't miss the latest Yale G&S events, email yalegands@gmail.com and asked to be added to our general mailing list.
  • Most shows are free admission, but make sure to reserve a seat at the Yale Drama Coalition website, as many performances sell out!
  • Membership

The only requirement for membership is participation in one main show. New members are inducted into the Society at the end of the show's run.

  • Benefits of membership include the right to run for the Society's governing Board and vote in board elections, as well as the opportunity to reserve tickets for Yale G&S productions before reservations are opened to the general public.
  • Auditions

Roles in Yale G&S productions are open to all members of the Yale community.  To receive the latest audition information, email yalegands@gmail.com and asked to be added to our show opportunities mailing list.

  • Audition information will also be posted here and on the Yale Drama Coalition website.
  • Patronage

  • As a non-profit theatrical company, the Yale Gilbert & Sullivan Society relies on the patronage of generous individuals from within and from outside Yale College.
  • Patrons are recognized in our show programs and have the opportunity to reserve premium seats for mainstage productions before the reservations are opened to the general public.
  • If you are interested in making a donation to help continue the 80-year tradition of Gilbert & Sullivan at Yale, please contact us our President, Dylan Morris.
  • History

  • Gilbert & Sullivan at Yale has been a tradition since the 1930s, when Jonathan Edwards College's Gilbert & Sullivan club first staged campus productions.
  • The current society was founded during the 1970s, and since then has helped to launch the careers of Broadway actors and professional opera singers, including Tony Award-winners David Hyde Pierce '81, Victoria Clark '82, and Lisa Hopkins '01.
  • Alumni/ae

  • If you are an alumnus or alumna of the society and would like to reconnect with the tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan at Yale or share stories or media that will help us to expand and improve our archives, please contact us at yalegands@gmail.com.
