student Colloquia
The Graduate School established the Dean's Fund for Research Workshops,
Seminars and Colloquia to encourage ongoing dialogue between students
and faculty regarding their scholarship and research. Some of these
conversations focus on a particular field of study, whereas others
address the intersection of multiple disciplines and provide a forum
for those at the University who would otherwise have less occasion
to interact. The Dean's Fund currently supports over twenty-five
student colloquia, many of which renew their funding annually and
have become an integral part of Yale's academic community. This program
also offers graduate students practical experience in developing
and administering academic series and events.
Student-organized research workshops, seminars and colloquia that
will hold at least four meetings per term are eligible for support
from the Dean's Fund. Please note that departmental activities formally
related to degree requirements cannot be supported by the Dean's
Fund. Please direct complete proposals via e-mail to Assistant Dean
Edward Barnaby according to the following schedule:
Term Award Deadline
Fall: Up to $500
September 30
Spring: Up to $500
January 30
Academic year: Up to $1,000
September 30
The e-mail should contain the following information (MS Word or
PDF attachments are acceptable):
* Names and contact information of the students organizing the
series
* Statement of up to two pages outlining the purpose and objectives
of the series
* Plan for incorporating institutional resources, such as collections,
galleries, laboratories or museums, into at least one meeting of
the colloquium (e.g., a paper on a current exhibit or research
project, a guest speaker from the curatorial staff, or a site visit)
* Tentative schedule listing proposed topics, readings, panelists
or speakers
* List of expected participants who have expressed interest in
the series (both graduate students and faculty)
* Itemized budget (please note that only $250 per term may be designated
for food and refreshments)
Students proposing a series to the Dean's Fund must also request
that their DGS draft an e-mail to Dean Barnaby evaluating the basic
merits of the proposed series and detailing the planned involvement
of faculty members in the department. |
