Dining at HGS - THE GRADUATE SCHOOL’S
DINING HALL

All Graduate School Students, Faculty and Staff are encouraged to
enjoy meals amid the neogothic charm of the Dining Hall in the Hall
of Graduate Studies (HGS) operated by Yale University Dining Services.
HGS Dormitory residents are required to enroll in at least a 10-meal
per week plan. Everyone is welcome to dine on a cash, university
charge, meal plan or Eli buck (points) basis. See the Dining Services

for a more informal place to eat breakfast or lunch, coffee or
snacks,
or to brownbag it, try the McDougal Center
Blue
Dog Café,
a student-run coffee bar in the McDougal Center Common Room
of HGS; cash,
charge or Eli bucks only.

Dinner Mon-Fri 5:00-8:00pm
*undergraduate transfers are not allowed after 6:30pm.

HGS offers a one-price for all you care to eat menu featuring
hot meat and vegetarian/vegan entrees, fresh soup, salad, sandwich
and bread bars,
desserts,

HGS Special Dinners
Each semester, HGS Dining Hall staff, working with the HGS Dormitory
Coordinator and Student Life at the McDougal Center, organize a
special theme dinner, with special menu, wine, linens and more.
Past special dinners have included a “Chocolate Festival,”
“Dinosaur Barbecue,” and the “Faculty Waits on
You.” All graduate and professional students are welcome to
join the HGS Community for special dinners on a meal plan, cash
or charge basis- watch the Web calendar.

Offers for Graduate School Students
FEAST TICKETS FOR MENTORING AND TEACHING
The Dean’s office sponsors the
FEAST (Free Eating Attracts Students and Teachers) program to encourage
Graduate School students to meet for a free lunch with graduate
faculty members, advisers and course instructors for informal conversations
and mentoring. There are 3 kinds of FEAST tickets- Mentoring, Women
Mentoring Women, and Teaching.
Mentoring: Each FEAST
ticket enables one Graduate School ladder Faculty member and 1 or
2 Graduate School Students to enjoy lunch together at HGS Dining
Hall. Tickets are available for signout at the McDougal Center Box
Office, HGS 123. Each Graduate School student or Graduate School
Faculty member may request up to two tickets per term.
Women Mentoring Women: Each WMW FEAST ticket enables
one woman faculty or staff mentor and 1 or 2 Graduate School Students
to enjoy lunch together at HGS Dining Hall. Tickets are available
for signout at the McDougal Center Box Office, HGS 123. Each mentor
or mentee may request up to two tickets per term.
Teaching: Created with the support of the GSA,
the FEAST for TEACHING program encourages faculty and grad student
teachers to meet regularly over lunch to discuss classroom and pedagogical
concerns. This FEAST for Teaching program is for Faculty and their
Graduate Student Teaching Fellows, or Departmental Language coordinators
and language PTAIs. Each ticket enables a faculty member supervising
TFs or PTAIs to meet with them as a group at lunch about once a
month. This program is available at HGS, KBT, SOM, and Marigolds
(Med) Dining Halls. Tickets are sent directly to Faculty supervising
TFs or PTAIs each term.
Dean's Dollar Off Discount
for HGS Lunch
To encourage collegiality, the
Dean sponsors a lunch discount for Graduate School students who
wish to join their colleagues at HGS Dining Hall. $1.00 off cash
transactions for lunch only. Sign in at the desk.
Special Requests and Catering
By pre-arrangement, departments and student groups may meet for meals
during normal dining hall hours, or as a special catered event on
weekends (Sat-Sun). Please contact the manager to setup charging to
your departmental account. The HGS Dining Hall also provides light
catering, including continental breakfast and sandwiches, and morning
and afternoon coffee service or desserts. HGS Dining Hall caters events
and meetings within the HGS Building, including 211 HGS or 401 HGS,
or 119 HGS in the McDougal Center. Contact the manager.
Questions and Suggestions
The HGS Dining Hall Manager and Staff welcomes student comments
and questions about dining services at HGS. Stop by the kitchen
or contact the HGS Dining Hall manager and staff with any special
dietary concerns or menu requests.
