Sources of Aid
Financial
assistance is provided in the form of Yale
University Fellowships, teaching
fellowships, traineeships, and research
assistantships. The nature of the assistance varies among
the divisions and departments. Yale University Fellowships are
awarded
at the time of admission. Students are normally provided a level
of support comparable to the Fellowship awarded at admission,
from the first through the fourth year of study. Eligible students
in
the Humanities and Social Sciences receive University
Dissertation Fellowships in their fifth or sixth year of
study.
Applicants to Ph.D.
programs are automatically considered for financial aid unless
they indicate that they have available resources that will
be sufficient to pay for tuition and maintenance for the duration
of their educational
program (normally four to six years). Applicants to master's
and DSR programs may apply for financial assistance unless
they
will
have resources available, including personal resources, gifts,
loans, and outside fellowships, sufficient to pay for tuition
and maintenance for the duration of their educational program
(normally
one to two years).
Yale University Fellowships University Fellowships include
full tuition plus a nine-month stipend.
University Fellowships are awarded upon recommendation by academic
departments to an Associate Dean of the Graduate School.
Teaching Fellowships At Yale, teaching is regarded as a central
component of graduate education. Teaching fellowships are available
in most departments and are usually combined with other fellowships
to establish a 4-year pattern of support. In cooperation with the
academic departments, the Graduate School attempts to provide teaching
opportunities sufficient to enhance graduate education but not so
numerous as to prevent completion of the Ph.D. within 6 years.

Traineeships Traineeships (National Research Service Awards)
from the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute
of Mental Health are available in most of the Biological Sciences
and in some other departments. These awards support full-time
Ph.D. study by U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals of the United
States,
and permanent residents. In combination with University and departmental
supplements, they provide payment of tuition, a monthly stipend,
and the hospitalization premium. For more detailed information
relating to traineeships, please refer to the director of graduate
studies
for your program of study.
Research
Assistantships Graduate Students in departments in which the
faculty receive research grants or contracts may be eligible for
appointments
as assistants in research. In most of the science departments, advanced
students are normally supported as research assistants by individual
faculty research grants. An assistantship in research provides a
monthly salary at a rate agreed upon by the department and the Graduate
School.
It is understood that the work performed not only is part of the
faculty principal investigator's research project but also is the
student's
dissertation research and therefore in satisfaction of a degree requirement.
University Dissertation Fellowships The Graduate School
offers University Dissertation Fellowships to eligible students
in the Humanities and Social Sciences who are at an advanced stage
of dissertation preparation, normally in the fifth or sixth year
of study.
