Waiver Eligibility & Instructions

To
be eligible to apply for a waiver of the application fee
you must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Permanent Resident Visa
Holder. Non-U.S. citizens are not eligible to
apply for a fee waiver. No exceptions will be made. |
The deadline for applying for a Fee Waiver for Fall 2009
is January 2, 2009.
Requests for a Fee Waiver or supporting documents received
after January 2, 2009 will not be considered.
All individuals meeting the eligibility requirements who wish to
be considered for a waiver or refund of the application fee must
follow the directions given below for the appropriate option. Except
as noted, all applicants must pay the application fee when submitting
their application in order for their application to be reviewed
and considered.
Please
review the three options below to determine if you are eligible
to apply for a refund or waiver of the application fee.
Option
A - Fellowship Recipients
Participants in certain fellowship programs and recipients of certain
fellowship funds do not have to pay the application fee but
their request for a fee waiver and all supporting documents must
be received on or before the deadline of your designated program
of study. . If you participated in, or received funding
from one of the programs listed below, you must send appropriate
program documentation and dates of participation. On the payment
page of the Online Application, select, “Pay By Check”,
print the Payment Voucher and mail it, along with a completed Fee
Waiver Request Form (see link below) and all supporting documentation,
to the address noted on the Payment Voucher. Your Fee Waiver Request,
supporting materials and Payment Voucher must be received prior
to the deadline date of your designated program of study
- Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholar
- Clare Mellon Fellowship Recipient
- Fulbright/IIE Fellowship Recipient for the 2008-2009 academic
year
- Henry Fellowship Recipient
- McNair Fellowship Recipient
- National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering
and Science/GEM Fellow
- Institute for Recruitment of Teachers/IRT Participant
- Minority Access to Research Careers/MARC Participant
- Yale SURF/Yale Leadership Alliance Participant
- Formal Exchange Program between Yale and another institution
- PPIA Fellowship Recipient
- Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Recipient
- Vietnam Education Foundation Fellowship Recipients
Option B - Recruitment Event attendees
If you are applying to the Combined Program in the Biological and
Biomedical Sciences (BBS) or Chemistry and received a pre-coded
Fee Waiver Form from a recruitment event or via a targeted mailing,
or if you attended a Graduate School Seminar and received a signed
Fee Waiver Request Form you do not have to pay the application fee.
On the payment page of the online application, choose the “Pay
by Check” option, print the Payment Voucher and mail it and
the Fee Waiver Request Form you have already received, to the address
noted on the Payment Voucher. Please note that Waiver Forms
or Fee Waiver Request Forms are matched to an applicant’s
name and can be used only once.
Option C - Demonstrated Financial Hardship
If you are not a participant in one of the above programs you may
still be eligible for a refund of the application
fee. You must meet the criteria and include the required documentation
as listed on the Fee Waiver Request Form. You are required
to pay the application fee when submitting your application and
your Request Form. Your Fee Waiver Request Form will only
be reviewed if the required fee and documentation reaches the Office
of Graduate Admissions prior to the deadline of the program you
are applying to. If your request is approved, your fee will be refunded
to you. The Online Application allows for two forms of payment;
if you are paying by check or money order, your Fee Waiver Request
form, supporting materials, payment and Payment Voucher should be
mailed to the address on the Payment Voucher; if paying by credit
card, your Fee Waiver Request form, supporting materials are to
be sent to the address on the Fee Waiver Request form. If you are
paying your application fee by check, you must apply (submit your
application) early enough so that your Fee Waiver Request form,
supporting materials and payment can be mailed in time to reach
us by January 2, 2009. Requests after that date will not
be processed and no refund will be made.
On the
Fee Waiver Request Form you must indicate the basis for your request.
These are:
- U.S.
Citizen/U.S. Permanent Resident with financial hardship documented
by an attached letter from your undergraduate university financial
aid officer.
- U.S.
Citizen/U.S. Permanent Resident with Financial Hardship documented
by completing page 2 of the Fee Waiver Request Form. You must
include a statement of prior education loans.
Important
information for all applicants
Please
note that if your fee waiver is approved, refunds (for application
fees paid by check or money order) may take up to 3 months to be
processed. If your application fee is paid by credit card your
account will be credited within 7 working days of the date your
Fee Waiver Request is approved.

Applicants* must submit the application
fee with their application. A refund of the application fee will
not be considered if we do not receive payment.
In order for there to be no delay in the processing of your
application please ensure you meet the eligibility requirements
stated above, that all required/appropriate supporting documents
are included with your Fee Waiver Request Form, and your application
fee has been paid.
You must submit your application and receive your Applicant
ID number before completing and mailing your Fee Waiver Request
form.
