Required Examinations

Official score reports must be submitted for all required examinations. Required or acceptable examinations are listed below as is the method of submission. If you are considering applying for the Fall of 2014 please register for the examination you will need as soon as possible as testing centers and available testing dates fill quickly.

The Graduate Record Examination

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General is required of all applicants to the Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In addition, certain Departments & Programs require scores from one of the Subject Tests (please refer to the Departments and Programs link to the left, select your program and then check for Special Admissions Requirements of your program in the Program and Policies bulletin or the program's web pages).

The Educational Testing Service administers the GRE in the United States and abroad. For details and registration forms, visit their site at www.ets.org or write to GRE, Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541-6000. Scores from this examination (or from the GRE Revised General Test) must be “released” to Yale University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (code 3987). Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred or used.

If you are applying to a Ph.D. program associated with the Schools of Forestry & Environmental Studies, Public Health, Nursing or Management, you must send your scores to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (code 3987) and not to the individual Schools which have separate codes for applicants applying to professional degree programs (e.g., MF, MPH, MSN and MBA degree programs).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required of all applicants whose native language is not English. This requirement is waived only for applicants who will have received a baccalaureate degree, or its foreign equivalent, prior to matriculation at Yale, from a university or college where English is the primary language of instruction.

A waiver will not be granted on the basis of an advanced degree from any institution.

Scores from this examination must be "released" to Yale University Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (code 3987). Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred or used.

The General Management Admission Test

The General Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the General Record Examination (GRE) is required of all applicants to the Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences PhD program in Management. Please use code 3TJ-30-78 for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences for your GMAT scores. GRE scores must be released to institution code (3987). Paper copies are not acceptable and scores released to other schools of Yale University cannot be transferred or used. For more information visit their web site at www.gmac.com or www.pearsonvue.com

International English Language Testing System

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores are acceptable in addition to or in lieu of TOEFL and TSE test scores. For details about this testing alternative, please visit www.ielts.org. The Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences only accepts scores submitted electronically by the IELTS test center via the IELTS Electronic Score Download Service. We do not accept paper Test Report Forms nor do we verify Test Report Forms (TRF's). Our Institutional code is 1424. At the time of test-taking you will want to specify Yale University-Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (also known as Office of Graduate Admissions). Our address, for the record only, to identifiy us in the IELTS system is 320 York Street, HGS 118 New Haven, CT 06511. Score reports are not to be sent to that address however.
