TEACHING APPOINTMENTS
RANKS AND STIPENDS for 2007-2008
Teaching Fellow 1: The responsibilities of a TF1 are primarily
(a) grading, (b) a combination of the following: attending class,
reading, advising undergraduates, offering an occasional discussion
section, helping to set up a lab or assisting in the administrative
details of a course, (c) in non-language courses
providing Language-across-the-Curriculum one-on-one language tutoring,
or (d) in language courses providing one-on-one tutoring sessions. A TF1 does not engage in regular
classroom instruction. Approximate weekly effort, 5 hours. The
2007-2008 stipend is $2,320.
Teaching Fellow 2: A TF2 typically leads and grades one discussion
or laboratory section of up to twenty students or has a combination
of the responsibilities described (a) and (b) in TF 1. A
TF2 also may lead a Language-across-the-Curriculum session for
courses with fewer than 30 students and no other sections. Approximate weekly
effort, 10 hours. The 2007-2008 stipend is $4,640.
Teaching Fellow 3: Depending on department
policy, the responsibilities of a TF3 may include leading and
grading one or two lab or discussion sections. Alternatively,
a TF3’s responsibilities might include
attending lectures, office hours and consultations, and grading.
Approximate weekly effort, 15 hours. The 2007-2008 stipend is $6,960.
Teaching Fellow 3.5: This appointment
is appropriate for TFs who lead and grade one section in English,
History of Art, the Literature major, in any literature course
in the national language departments that may conform to the same
mode of teaching, in courses double titled with these departments
and programs, and in a few designated courses. Section leaders
are appointed only for lecture courses with 30 or more students;
section size should not exceed 18 students, and 20 is the absolute
maximum. This appointment also is used for Writing Intensive TFs
in other departments and for Language-across-the-Curriculum section
leaders. Approximate weekly effort, 17.5 hours. The 2007-2008 stipend
is $8,120.
Teaching Fellow 4: This appointment is appropriate for TFs in
humanities and social science departments where teaching fellows
lead and grade two sections. Section leaders are appointed only
for lecture courses with 30 or more students; section size should
not exceed 18 students, and 20 is the absolute maximum. Approximate
weekly effort, 20 hours. The 2007-2008 stipend is $9,280.
Teaching Assistants: Professional school students assisting in
FAS courses are appointed at the levels and stipends listed above
with the title Teaching Assistant.
Assistants in Instruction: In the rare cases where non-students
assist in FAS courses, they are appointed at the levels and stipends
listed above with the title Assistant in Instruction.
Part-Time Acting Instructor: Graduate and professional school
students appointed as Part-Time Acting Instructors (PTAIs) are
responsible for the conduct of classes in introductory courses
or for advanced courses, normally seminars in their special fields.
PTAIs are subject to departmental guidance, which, in the case
of multi-section introductory courses, may entail the use of a
common syllabus and examinations. No student should teach more
than one PTAI course per semester. PTAIs who teach advanced courses
must have satisfied all predissertation requirements (including
the dissertation prospectus) and must be registered full time in
order to be eligible for the appointment. Graduate and professional
students chosen to teach Residential College Seminars are appointed
as PTAIs and paid the standard PTAI stipend. Like all teaching,
hours of effort for PTAIs cannot be approximated and will vary
from one individual to another. The 2007-2008 stipend is $9,380.
Lecturer: Non-students who serve in capacities
equivalent to Part-Time Acting Instructors are appointed as Lecturers.
Funding approval and appointments must be arranged with the Provost’s
Office.
