Joint Ph.D./MBA
Program
Recognizing the long-standing applicability of
the Ph.D. beyond the academy and the increasing relevance of sophisticated
management analysis in the highly varied positions held by many
Ph.D. recipients, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS)
will join with the School of Management (SOM) to offer one of the
first joint degrees of its kind, the MBA/Ph.D. This joint degree
program will enable doctoral students to apply their subject expertise
and research skills in the increasingly varied private, public or
nonprofit sectors where many Ph.D. recipients make their careers.
It also will provide tomorrow’s managers with intensive subject
and disciplinary expertise epitomized by Ph.D. programs. The new
MBA/Ph.D. draws on SOM's management focus across these sectors as
well as the Graduate School's research strengths in an exceptional
range of academic disciplines. More than simply a list of courses
taken at both schools, the joint degree will combine the two programs
in ways that complement both while protecting the integrity of each
separate program.

The joint degree
combines the two-year MBA degree with the six-year Ph.D. It would
allow its students to complete requirements for both degrees in
roughly 7 years rather than the 8 or more years that would be required
if the degrees were pursued separately. Both degrees will be awarded
simultaneously at the conclusion of the seven-year period. Like
all graduate students, joint degree students will receive a full
financial aid package from the Graduate School during the terms
registered there. For students in the humanities and social sciences,
this includes four years of tuition, five years of stipend and health
insurance for each term registered. Funding for students in the
sciences will mirror standard, departmental packages. Students will
pay one and a half years of tuition for the three terms registered
at the SOM.
